Fragmented Lenin
My friend told me about the music by Eleni Karaindrou, I don't know which composition was the first I heard, but I will put this one in the first place of my every playlist, life event, feeling, longing etc... It's from the movie Ulysses' Gaze, directed by Teo Angelopoulos. Eleni cooperated with him in many films, and I claim that they woudn't be the same if she didn't give them the specific atmosphere thanks to her musical talent. This theme from the movie comes to the foreground in one scene, when Ulysses is on some kind of a train ferry, and there is a Lenin statue, cut in fragments so that the transport could be easier. The symbolic end of one era represented in this destruction makes a huge impression on a spectator. The statue remains monumental, it's even more obvious, because you can see how huge are his hands, for example, or head, like in these photos:

And here's the music, 17 minutes of pure perfection!
There is almost not a single work of art by Eleni I don't like. Check these compositions, from other Teo's movies, "Eternity and a Day" and "The Weeping Meadow"
She doesn't make only sad music, there are wonderful joyful songs, like Tango of Love, Hasaposerviko...
But this story about Lenin reminded me of another movie with the same motif, "Goodbye Lenin" (dir. Wolfgang Becker). Here too we can see the demolition of the statue of Lenin. It's exciting to see Lenin flying again:
The soundtrack was written by famous and ingenious Yann Tiersen.
I highly recommend every song, but my personal favourite is The Deutsch Mark is Coming
I hope you wil enjoy their music, and also watch the movies, because they are really worth it, I consider them all masterpieces.
