New Music: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard -- Polygondwanaland (psst...it's free)
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard are on a mission. Late last year, the already prolific Aussie 7-piece promised something that few bands could follow through with: they wanted to release 5 albums in 2017. People thought it was crazy, but you know what? They may actually do it.
February saw 2017's first album, "Flying Microtonal Banana," which saw the band experimenting with microtones. June's "Murder of the Universe" gave us a concept album with three separate stories, complete with narration. In August, we were given "Sketches of Brunswick East," a collaboration with Mild High Club. And now, the fourth album, "Polygondwanaland," has been released with a nice little twist: it's 100 percent free. Like, FREE free. Want to download it for your personal use? It's free. Want to download the vinyl masters, press your own records, and sell your own copies of this album? Go right ahead (seriously, this is coming right from the band themselves). Already, I've seen dozens of independent labels and ordinary fans planning out their own variants to make some money off of. I know bands have released their music for free before, but I don't think I've ever seen a band allow fans to make money off of their music. Also, it's a pretty sick album.
Download it here for free, and while you're at it, spend a couple bucks on an album of theirs. They're all pretty different from one another, so there's gotta be something you'd like. If you check it out, let me know what you think. I've already turned a handful of friends into pretty big fans of theirs, and much like the band, I have no plans of stopping anytime soon.
