My Steemit Screencast - Psytrance Episode 1 - Creating a Kick and Bass

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hi folks!

So I decided it would be cool to screen cast a couple videos on some of the start-off points for making psytrance. This first video is me messing around trying to get some kick and bass going from scratch, while the next few to follow will be focusing on leads, arrangement, sound design...etc..etc basically a whole track if I can manage that!

I'll try to keep it regular but I'm moving house this week, and it will be a while before I am settled again I think (plus I will have to re-learn my mixing environment!), so let's see how things go.

I believe there is some distortion in the video when audio is playing from the soundcard on my motherboard (couldn't get the screencast to work with my soundcard yet), but when I am settled I will be able to sort that out and also get a microphone to chat about what exactly I am doing.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you find this video interesting.

Not another ...Kick and Bass tutorial!!

P.S. I will probably screencast other sessions that I work on which will crosses genres (Pop, Irish Traditional, Rock, Beats, etc...) so hopefully there will be a nice amount variety for y'all!

i have been wondering for ages about your bassline xD very nice too get a little peak :D very good learning possibility here :3 thanks thanks thank!!

Aye, all "secrets" revealed! more to follow!

I have a lot going on this week as you know, but i will dive into these when i have time next week! ^_^
Thanks in advance!

the velocity -> vol is pretty nice never tought about it.... i do my bassline with vb-1 but might switch to serum after this ;D thanks bro keep up the quality posts!!

cheers

Yes vel->vol is fairly standard for getting a nice groove going easily. I also have the pitch of the note slightly adjusting the filter also, so higher notes on the scale close the filter a little bit as I find higher notes opening up the filter take up too much space in the mix. I am only modulating by a tiny bit though (-10).

Vb-1 is a classic, each synth has its own character so it depends what sound you are going for. Like choosing a stratocaster over a les paul for a particular guitar sound in a band situation. I like serum for its high resolution (check the global tab and select 4x quality, especially for FM sounds) and the moog style filters are pretty tasty too!
