New Release: DEAD REGISTER - Captive EP (2018)
On November 2nd 2018, gothic post-metal band Dead Register will release their new EP Captive. The release is the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2016 Fiber LP.
Do you want to know what caught my eye and made me decide to check out this EP?
Dead Register can be described as The Cure covering Neurosis. Or Peter Murphy covering Swans. Or Bauhaus covering Type O Negative. Or Dead Can Dance covering Isis.
I might use a phrase more like "sounds like The Cure, down an octave, and with more distortion." That's not entirely accurate either, though. The songs have a pop sensibility to them under all of gothic gloomy haze. That's where the less metal bands in the list above come into play.
The music here is heavy, dark, and soaring. There are a lot of melodic leads, always drenched in just the correct amount of delay and reverb. Some of the awesome low notes you hear are made by keyboards, not bass or guitars.
You can pre-order the EP right now on Bandcamp.
Their bio there sheds more light on their sound and how they create it:
Dead Register is a genre-bending, sad-sap, tortured, cry-in-my-coffee, gloomy, pretentious, heavy dual-bass band fronted by husband and wife: M.Chvasta (vocals, bass VI, bass) and Avril Che (low-low end, 88 keys, synthetic bass, piano bass, textures, backing vocals, live visuals, all band artistic media), along with newcomer Danny Ryann (percussion).
RIYL: TYPE O NEGATIVE, PINKISH BLACK, CHELSEA WOLFE
For reference, here's a music video for a great song from their 2016 full length:
