My life in music - As a job aplication
Yesterday I applied for a job. I was asked as part of the application to write about how music has effected my life. This is what I wrote.
My life in music, a brief history
It starts in the usual way. The music obsessed child sat at his dads record player as Jimi screamed from the speakers. When I was 15 I left school. I looked old enough to lie about my age. So I took a job at the local community radio station. I started making the tea and helped make radio commercials. When I should have been doing my school exams, I was filling in for a sick breakfast show presenter. The radio stations niche was soul and hip hop. This was the start of my education
My next door neighbor was in a minor 90's indie band signed to Virgin records. When was not on tour we would go to the local pub and chat about music. He was a good teacher, much better than the ones at school. His lesson plan consisted of classic 60’s guitar bands and 70’s punk,
Thanks to my radio station job and friends on the local music scene. I was a fully signed up member of the music industry. At the age of 16, I was being sent free music, months before it's release. I was being invited to gigs and my friends were getting me in to some of the coolest clubs in the country.
By the time I was 20 I had been lucky enough to meet most of my heroes. It had been a short journey from buying their records to actually meeting them and in some cases working with them. I had successfully put my self through night school and was a qualified sound engineer. My specialty was live sound and my big influence was King Tubby. The guitar fueled indie bands of my home city now had a distinct dub vibe.
I managed some of the bands I was now providing live sound for. If I spotted something good. I was quick to use the contacts I had. This was the beginning of me working as a scout for some indie labels and manager for some bands. Every day I was in a rehearsal room or studio. Every night a club or pub. When you really get into music, you forget what day light is
During this period a lot happened. I am not writing my life story, I am just trying to score a job. Let’s just say it was eventful with minor successes a big frustrations. I reached a period in my 20’s when I was broke and in love. I went and got a real job working for a magazine. After 6 months I quit and started a new life as a DJ and club promoter.
I started to embrace underground tekno and jungle. I always did love a good tekno night and jungle was an extension of the 70’s dub music I loved so much. I loved to get high, I loved to play music. What else was I going to do. I started to play clubs and warehouse parties. Before moving to Spain and joining the European rave circus.
This part of my life lasted a long time. I went through many style’s of electronic music and many cocktails of party powders. You can use your imagination here. But I will say one thing, it was a good party. It was a long party, It was a fucking good party.
At this time in my life I live in Asia. I spend my days searching the internet looking for things to listen to. as I enjoy the heat and sun. After years of being in clubs and studios I thought I was due. That is why I am, in Asia it is hot and sunny all the way.
I currently write, I write about shit. Shit pays money. Money pays for sun. You opportunity interests and excites me. Can I write about something I love?
What music do I follow, tough question. I do not follow the charts or trace, Other than that. It is all fair game.
Ask me a question, then I can reply. Then we are talking.
That is my job application. I don't think I will get the job. But it made me think that I have a story. I am trying to decide if I keep on writing. This is my first post to steemit or anything. I just thought fuck it, why not.
