Snarky Puppy Live in Sydney! - Meeting Michael League

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hi

Hope there are a few musicians on this platform while it's this small :)

Just wanted to share a video and a small story about how I met one of my favourite musicians/composers.

My girlfriend and I, as big fans of Snarky Puppy couldn't resist seeing them when they announced their Australia tour. The concert was an incredible experience of musicianship (and also comedy entertainment, thanks to Shaun Martin) in which I didn't feel distanced from their musical expertise but was included. Everyone sang along with the melodies. A woman behind me was scatting along with a few of the songs, which honestly sounded beautiful. There was a real sense of comradery in that everyone there was a musician, young and old, united by a love of Snarky Puppy.

After the concert, we were walking back to our car and realised; the band has to exit the theatre somehow...
So we then circumnavigated the building, following the echoing sound of a lone trumpet player, who we hoped was one of the band members. At the back of the theatre was a dark alleyway. We noticed, peering through the fog, two white vans parked next to a door. As casually as we could, we walked along the road towards the van as the trumpet got louder. Two people with American accents were talking behind the van so I went up to them and asked if we could wait around to meet the band. "Shuuure," one of them said in that weird American way.

We sat on the gutter and waited in the freezing cold (which left us both with tonsilitis a day later) getting very excited and nervous. We waited longer than half an hour actually but it was worth it. The door opened and we stood up and rushed over to them. Michael League (my idol, as we're both bassists and composers) smiled widely and hugged my girlfriend and shook my hand. We told him how lovely the concert was and he genuinely did seem gladdened to hear it. We chatted for 5 minutes about non-specific things like beaches and birthdays. They were tired and had another concert the next night and so we let them go.

It was an honour to meet him, and its been fun telling other Snarky fans that I have.

Hope you like the video

Cheers
