Slash (Saul Hudson)

"Is a mediocre guitarist, overrated, has no good technique, has no speed, is not virtuoso, he has not invented new techniques for the guitar, he does not have many resources, does not use tapping or sweep picking, he always uses the same scales, he does not use altered scales, he does not use arpeggios, he is only famous for his particular hat and because he was a formal member of Guns N' Roses"

This is not what I think, this is what I've heard and read on the Internet every day. Some people think that Slash is a slow guitar player, it's true that there are other faster guitarists but it doesn't mean that he's slow have you tried to play the final solo of paradise city? composing music isn't a marathon in which the fastest is the best, speed doesn't really mean anything if that were the case then there would be no blues, the technique has to be in function of the music and for most technical guitarists it is on the contrary losing all feeling in its execution.

The fact that he does not use tapping or sweep picking like Steve Vai or Satriani does not mean anything at all because each guitarist uses the resources that work for his way of playing the guitar and their way of expressing. Some time ago I saw an interview with carlos santana in which he stated that "There are many guitarists who have excellent technique, but there is another group of guitarists in which listening to a single note is anough to recognize them"

Slash is the kind of guitarist who puts the melody as the main ingredient for the composition and how that melody works over harmony. Can you imagine another kind of solo for November Rain? I don't... I think it's the perfect solo for that mestra piece... A fast and technical guitar solo would just destroy that song.

Peace

I wouldn't consider him bad but I don't think he has advanced as a guitarist like some of the other greats have throughout their career. To me he is at the same level as his earlier stuff.

Songs like "Anastasia" makes me think otherwise

Great post @undeniable, really.
I've seen the Guns at the Werchter Classic festival (Belgium) this year and frankly, it was amazing!!! The show lasted 3 hours, yes 3 hours of pure Rock and Roll!!!
And despite what some people said, Slash is a f...ing guitarist. Close your eyes and listen to his soli... it's incredible!!
And I know why he is considered as one of the best guitar player in the world : he really plays with his heart, with his soul, not only with his fingers. And that makes all the difference, and you can feel it...
