[Music Discovery] This week I 'ave been mostly listenin' to...
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Label: Arts & Crafts
Genre: Indie rock
If I was a contestant on Mastermind, and if I couldn't have the Alien movies, then mid-00s indie rock would probably be my specialist subject. In 2005 I was 17, in my final year of Sixth Form and loving life and that's probably why the music from that period has a special meaning for me. Broken Social Scene were an already established Canadian indie rock band with a loyal audience by October 2005, as they released their third studio album. I hadn't heard of them before, but a friend recommended this record to me and I was hungry for as much music as I could get my teenage hands on. I managed to find a dodgy MP3 copy on Limewire, or a Limewire clone, which as we all know by now was the 00s way of giving your computer Super Gonorrhea.
Broken Social Scene (the band) are so much more than just another indie rock band though, more accurately they're a musical collective consisting of as few as six members, or as many as 19 at any given time. This gives the group an advantage over others, in that they can dynamically change how they sound over time by adding or removing members as necessary. It's this combination of the many various members sounds and styles that sets Broken Social Scene apart from their peers.
The self-titled album was my first introduction to the super group, and it remains probably my favourite of all their records. It was initially released with a seven-track bonus EP, EP to Be You and Me, which due to it's limited release and the near cult following around the band, is quite hard to find these days (at least for a reasonable price). There was no lyric sheet for this record, so some people won't like the almost garbled and highly interpretable words for some of the tracks, but try considering it an exercise in surrendering yourself. The album won the award for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2006 Juno Awards, and was also shortlisted for the 2006 Polaris Music Prize.
The original name of the album was to be Windsurfing Nation and was to feature a cartoon rendition of Pangea, however that name was scraped and the group instead went with the drawing that we see, which was drawn by lead singer Kevin Drew.
The tracks almost feel disjointed at times, having a far more loose feel than their contemporaries. There's a full sound to this album, a respectable achievement considering it was their third record. There's so much to explore and enjoy, with me still coming back to this gem time after time and never feeling tired. I've included one of my favourite tracks, 7/4 Shoreline, down below.
What do you think of this record? Are you a fan of this Canadian indie supergroup? Let me know your thoughts and feelings down in the comments, and I'll see you there. If you have any recommendations you think I might enjoy then give me a shout, I'm always after new listening material. Until next time, be excellent to each other!

Great band. Saw them Toronto island back in better times!
You're a lucky guy! I did see them in 2006 at Leeds Festival, and they were great.
Massive Attack got burned at the border so they played instead. Emily from Metric was with them!
