The story of Lila the dog
The Blackwell family adopted a Labrador who was just a newborn puppy at the time. Their mother, Michelle had an agreement to take care of the puppy and foster it for two years before handing it back to the pet adoption centre. The Blackwell’s youngest son named William was diagnosed with Asperger. The parents have always taken extra care of him, due to his condition, causing his sister and brother to be jealous of the lack of attention they were received.
When William turned seven years old, the parents came to an agreement and plan to give him a Labrador as a pet to order to help him with his struggles. Yet they were not able to afford the dog for its entire life, so they decided to have it for two years. When 2 month old puppy came home, she was named Lila by the Blackwell’s daughter Bethany Rosa, who was 11 years old. The puppy was raised by the father, Daniel and grew up with the autistic William. As the puppy grew larger, it formed a great relationship with Michelle, Daniel, Bethany and William. Each of them giving her a different memory of her childhood.
Because the family had so a wonderful relationship with the dog, they began to feel uneasy when their two year contract came to an end. Especially now that William was nine years old, he was learning much better and doing much better than he ever did, with the dog by his side. So Michelle and Daniel had a long and hard conversation, Bethany strongly disagreed on the dog leaving. Although she was now a teenager (thirteen), she cared deeply for the dog as well as her brother, whom needs the dog. So in the end, the parental decided to keep the dog and played a great deal of money, for William’s sake as well as Bethany’s complaints.
However, their oldest child and son, Jonathan did not like Lila. Mainly because he always bullied William and every time, since he was a child, when he ties William to a tree Lila would come to help. Since Lila was four month old, she always hated Jonathan, the oldest son and considered him to be ‘unfriendly’. So he always despised the dog and refused to do any chores that relates to Lila. He never got much chances to bully his little brother when the dog was around, apart from the time when Lila was sick and had to go to the vet. The rest of the family sent her there, because William did not like to visit hospitals, so he stayed home. That was the only time Jonathan got a chance, without everyone’s sight to bully him.
As he turned fifteen, Jonathan became nastier towards the family, including Michelle, Daniel and Bethany. Due the nasty friends he hangs around with at school and a girlfriend who was good at nothing.
One day, as Jonathan went home with his girlfriend Belinda, Lila came up and tried her best to welcome her. Belinda hated dogs, so she kicked Lila on the back. Lila winced in pain and got up fast, as Jonathan and Belinda were laughing at her and bite the girlfriend hard on the leg. Belinda started bleeding and ran out, slapping Jonathan on the face as she ran out. Since then broke up with him.
“You’ve done it this time! I will make sure you regret the day you were born” Jonathan muttered to the dog as the family returned home.
Ever since, Jonathan’s hatred towards Lila grew stronger and stronger. He no longer hostile Lila, but considered her to be a pest in the family. The family’s relation with Lila grew stronger throughout the year, and towards the end of the year Lila was three years old. Jonathan’s hatred also grew stronger in the year, mainly because he suffered at school and was picked on by his ‘friends’ since the incident. He always tried his best to seize an opportunity to be alone with Lila, in order to seek revenge on the dog.
William, however was 12 years old by then and more of an indoor person than Jonathan could ever believe of. He slept with Lila and did everything with the dog. So, basically when Michelle, Daniel and Bethany went outdoor, he would be in his bedroom with the dog next to his feet, while he plays his video games. Jonathan found it frustrating, how William was always there when an opportunity came.
It's been a year already and Jonathan was three days before he turned sixteen. He still sees Lila and the family laughing, even his younger brother laughing. He was extremely unhappy and really wanted the time to be now. So he went to William’s bedroom and snapped his computer keyboard in half. The thirteen year old boy with Asperger, found his keyboard broken and asked his parents and sister to go out to shop for a new one. So, this time the entire family of four went to the tech shop and Jonathan refused to go, saying he had an assignment to complete. This time, he was left alone with the dog.
As Lila was laying on William’s bedroom rug like usual, chewing his favourite toy, Jonathan got inside with a knife. Lila noticed the sense of footsteps and before she knew it, Jonathan was right behind her. The dog barked with fury and fear, knowing that she could not fight someone with a knife in his hands. So Lila decided to escape, however Jonathan was much too fast for that.
He quickly got hold of Lila’s collar and the knife just managed to miss her body, as she sprinted away with the collar ripped off. Just as he was about to reach the fearful dog who was now hiding underneath William’s bed, the Blackwell arrived home. William noticed as he saw Lila that there was something unusual about her fur. It was dented in and one of her legs were limping, due to Jonathan putting weight on her as he tried to stab the knife.
Jonathan quickly made an excuse that he did not notice the dog was there, so he ‘accidentally’ stepped on Lila. William gasped and the family took the dog to the vet. On the way, Lila knew from her heart that she could no longer stay in the family. Yes, it was wonderful growing up with people whom she loved, especially William. But there is no way that she is ever able to win this over Jonathan, she knows no matter what, that the parental will always place their children before a dog. Even if she managed to escape Jonathan this time, she knows he will do it again when he has the chance to.
So that very night, Lila glanced over that the human family one last time. William wearing his headphones like normal, with one arm over her as if she was his child, Bethany looking at her phone on her social media like always and the parental busy talking about their shopping. So she decided to slowly creep out of William’s arm, he noticed that Lila was acting unusual, however he did not make a comment. Lila hoped out of the open window that was making the breeze in the car. The family gasped and since then William could not have been more depressed
