World of Palms (Acquaintance)

My recent visit to Singapore Garden by the Bay, I was fascinated by the varieties of Palms tree. Palms are incredibly versatile and useful plants. Palms contribute shelter, fibres, fruit, starch and oil to many of man’s purposes. When you visit Singapore Garden by the bay’ World of Palms garden, you will see tropical lowland palms arranged to display the full array of variation of their stems, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Palm leaves form fans to feather shapes, you can take note of the different shapes and sizes of palm leaves and also the huge variety of texture, such as spines, wax coating and scales. These features are used by botanists to identify the different species of palms.

When it comes to palm structure, adaptation into many different environments has resulted in the varied and interesting shape we see on stem, leaf-sheaths and roots of palms. You can see how a palm that grows in flooded ground manages to keep itself upright!
