The Mongoose - Surprising World #1
Hi Steemers, it's a pleasure to write a new post for you. This time, I have decided to create a new section/documentary that will be called, Surprising World. It will be devoted mainly to topics related to Nature, Animals and Discoveries. I hope that this new section likes and is supported by you. So without further ado... Welcome to our Surprising World .
The Mongoose, has the scientific name Herpestidae, belonging to a family of placental mammals, which includes 33 species that live in many parts of Africa, Asia and southern Europe.
Some of them are nocturnal and live alone, others live in groups with which they share food and leave during the day, an example is the yellow mongoose, they live in colonies of up to 50 individuals. Their home is mainly found in cracks in rocks or holes in the ground, sometimes excavated by themselves, but they constantly occupy dens abandoned by other animals.
Although it seems harmless, it is actually a very large, but very agile predator. Among its diet includes some species such as insects, worms, snails, frogs, lizards, beetles, crabs, fruits and eggs. But what has grown its reputation is the reputation it has as a predator of snakes.
And it is that if it has something characteristic this animal, is that it can face snakes like cobras, due to its thick layer of fur, it does not allow the fangs of snakes to penetrate its skin, it also has enough agility to move quickly and thus elude the attacks of snakes. If they were reached by one of these poisonous snakes, which is not very common, your immune system is able to generate the necessary toxins so that the poison has no effect. That being the case, according to studies it would take more than 8 doses of poison to be able to kill it. Although they usually hunt snakes, they do not consume it if they have other foods available.
In some countries they are often used, for human entertainment. In markets you can see organized fights between mongooses and snakes, a show in which the mongooses are not in danger.
It is incredible that snakes responsible for thousands of human deaths throughout the world, are completely vulnerable or even sometimes a rich dish of mongooses, and that the latter without the need for technologies, medical intervention or antidotes, are sufficiently equipped and prepared with everything necessary to face up to the most powerful poisons in the world, as is that of cobras.
