It was discovered by Giannis Petrochelios after a disastrous earthquake of 7.3 on the Richter scale in 1953 revealed the subterranean lake, with a depth of approximately 30 meters, that bathes the room to collapse the cave. The cenote, we could call it that, has the shape of the letter "B" and contains two separate chambers. The ceiling of one of them is the one that sank and by which the sunlight accesses reflecting the water

In 1962 excavations were carried out in the interior of Melissani and found archaeological remains of the ancient Minoan culture that settled on the island of Kefalonia between the years 3000 and 1400 BC. Among the remains found are oil lamps, plates and figures that show the god Pan and his nymphs.

As a curious fact, it is necessary to know that the lake mixes the fresh water of the underground springs with the sea water, which is located only 1 kilometer from the cave. Thus, on one side of the cave enters the salt water and looks for the exit at the other end.

When visiting the cave, if we look through the saline mirror we can distinguish a brown color in the background. According to the legend is the honey smell of the stones that greet the visitors from the bottom inviting us to swim along with the nymphs

In July and August the water inside, as the sun spreads, change color according to the intensity of light, and in addition the contrast of chiaroscuro and shadows, coining a range of luminous beams that impregnate the walls with millions Of particles of light, as if the Nymphs of a distant past, would like to play with the reflections and paint with them musical notes of dream songs that serve to escape the oblivion in which they were enclosed.
