Cuckoo squirrel Piaya cayana

I want to share with you an observation that I made at Finca Buena Vista, in the municipality of Líbano, in the department of Tolima, Colombia.

I present this beautiful bird that we commonly call Cuckoo squirrel, scientifically known as Piaya Cayana, this bird we have seen from the top of the mountain flying over the canopy of the forest in short tours. It looks like a squirrel that glides from tree to tree. It has a reddish color on its head and part of its body, its abdomen and chest is gray, its beak yellow and has a long tail above reddish as its body and below it has black color with white spots. It can measure up to 46 centimeters.
Les presento esta preciosa ave que común mente la llamamos Cuco ardilla, científicamente se le conoce como Piaya cayana, ésta ave la hemos visto desde arriba de la montaña sobre volando el dosel del bosque en cortos recorridos. Parece una ardilla que planea de árbol en árbol. Tiene un color rojizo en su cabeza y parte de su cuerpo, su abdomen y pecho es gris, su pico amarillo y tiene una larga cola por encima de color rojizo como su cuerpo y por debajo tiene color negro con manchas blancas. Puede medir hasta 46 centímetros.
The photograph was taken just when the bird was perching; usually this species we have observed as a couple and flock of pairs, it is abundant in this area because it is close to the Alegrías Reserve. It seems, like many birds, they love having a space to rest, eat, live and reproduce. That is the importance of having natural conservation areas.
La fotografía fue tomada justo cuando el ave estaba perchando; usualmente ésta especie la hemos observamos en pareja y bandada de parejas, es abundante en ésta área por estar cerca a la Reserva Alegrías. Al perecer como a muchas aves les encanta tener un espacio donde reposar, comer, vivir y reproducirse. He ahí la importancia de tener áreas de conservación natural.
