Grizzly Bear Distribution

This species lives in the rocky areas of the United States, Canada, and Alaska. This last place concentrates the largest number of population. It is also located in northern Mexico, covering the states of Durango and Chihuahua. Specimens have been found in Siberia within the Kamchatka peninsula.

Previously there was a large number in Europe but due to uncontrolled killing, today they survive in captivity.

Grizzly Bear Description

These bears are brown and reach a weight of 130-360 kg, although some Alaskan specimens have surprised with a higher weight. They measure 1.02 meters high from the ground to the shoulder on average but the average length of their body is 1.98 meters.

The hind legs contain very strong muscles that allow them to carry the most weight, either when running or when walking bipedally. These reach speeds of 55 km/h.

It differs from other bear species because the Grizzly has claws longer than the others, apart from having on its back hairs with silver tips that simulate gray hair. Hence it's named.

On their back, they contain a muscle that is confused with a hump, which is used to drag the animals they have captured.

Grizzly Bear Behavior

It is a very aggressive, territorial and competitive mammal. In spite of its size, it can climb trees without difficulty and usually faces other bear species to access food.

Females, on the other hand, are much more aggressive when they have young, and although humans are not part of their daily diet, the presence of man can be dangerous, as mothers often kill and even devour those who represent a danger to their small cubs. 70% of attacks on humans have been by grizzly bears.

When they are males or females have no offspring, they do not always behave aggressively with others, but the animal instinct is unpredictable.

Grizzly Bear Feeding

They're omnivorous animals. They consume fruits, grasses, barks of the tree, berries, tubers and especially vegetables, is this 90 % of their feeding.

On the other hand, they hunt large animals such as reindeer, bison, deer and even black bears. They consume fish such as trout, salmon, and snook.

Shortly before their hibernation, they prepare with large amounts of food, which gives them 180 kg more weight. To prevent predators from knowing where they will shelter, they wait for snowstorms to make visibility difficult so that they can enter the cavities.

Females give birth during their winter breaks and twins are usually born.

Attacker of the humans

In the statistics on fatal bear attacks on humans, it is reflected that the Grizzly Bears have starred in several fatal onslaughts. They have been carried out, mostly, by a mother bear in fortuitous encounters with some person. Excursionists and ecologists have been victims of this ferocious animal. Even though its dietary preference is not human flesh, by relating people to food, an onslaught is imminent. Therefore, it is better to stay away from these animals.

danger of extinction of the grizzly bear

Many factors have put this species at risk. There is a significant percentage of deaths caused by human hunting. This is due to the danger that the grizzly bear represents for man. They are also exterminated for the pleasure and pride in killing such a powerful animal.

Likewise, actions such as the massive felling of pines and forest fires are attempted against this species. Added to this is the installation of energy companies such as oil and gas, and natural phenomena such as climate change. All together makes the limited habitat of the grizzly bear is under constant threat.
