Enchelycore anatina

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Even among the moray eels, using these bad reputation, these toothy predators are one of the most dangerous and formidable in appearance. These are saber-toothed moray eels (Latin Enchelycore anatina), which live in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean: the Canary and Azores, near St. Helena and off the coast of Madeira.

Hidden and slow, these ocean predators hide in the narrow crevices of rocks and coral reefs at a depth of up to 60 meters, spending all the bright part of the day there. Poking their heads out, they drive it from side to side, looking out for prey passing by, and with the onset of darkness they leave the shelter to go hunting.

Because of the wide black stripes scattered over the yellow trunk, the saber-toothed moray eels received the nickname "tiger moray eel".

Like the first name, it very accurately characterizes its character and appearance: this ruthless predator, growing to 120 cm in length, is armed with two rows of razor-sharp teeth, as clear as glass. Most of them, long and narrow, with a height of more than 2.5 cm, alternate with short and wide.

Like other moray eels, the saber-toothed moray eels have at once two pairs of jaws. Expecting prey in narrow burrows, they can not open their mouths wide and capture the victim along with the water. They have to push out the second, hidden deep in the throat, the jaw, which drags the prey into the esophagus.

Despite the transparency, the teeth of the tiger moray eels are very strong, capable of easily splitting the shell of crayfish and crabs. To keep the purity of these crystal-like teeth moray are helped by shrimp-cleaners, quietly living in symbiosis with their dangerous neighbors.
