Made quite a trek to find theseobsidian hills
I read about this site in a rockhounding book. So I flew three and a half hours from Texas to San Francisco, California and drove three hours to Kelseyville, California where this site sits on the side of Highway 175.
I had no idea what to expect from the site. I thought it would be bare field where I would have to spend hours looking for small pieces of obsidian. Surprisingly, obsidian was plentiful just on the side of the main road and more astonishing are the humongous pieces sticking out of the sandy hills.
Naturally, I collected some specimens. Oddly, I only brought home a small bag full of medium sized pieces.
The experience itself was worth the long trek. The specimens are just a bonus. The reaction I got out of my kids that went with me was heart-warming.
