The Island of Krakatoa

in #nature7 years ago

In August of 1883 the island of Krakatoa, to the east of Java, disappeared after a tremendous volcanic explosion. Exactly 80 years later a new island emerged in its place totally out of nothing.

Some time later it was discovered that the cause of this strange phenomenon was a continuous series of ferocious volcanic eruptions under the sea south of Iceland.

Wind and erosion have reduced their size since their appearance, but this has not deterred some animals from inhabiting the island. Among the residents we can find seals, puffins, swans, geese and crows.
