Nature Identification Thread #19- Now Paying out Steem Basic Income Memberships to Participants!

in #nature6 years ago

It's time for the weekly nature identification thread! Post pictures of plants, animals, rocks, or other cool stuff that you've photographed but can't identify, and I, along with anyone else who would like to help, will try and help you identify it. I'll be making some changes to it- most notably, I'll be using the SBD proceeds from this post to give out @steembasicincome memberships to people who post stuff to be identified or help me identify photos.

Water rounded gravel from a beach in Greece. Beyond it being water rounded, relatively little can be done in the way of identification- the water rounding often eliminates any identifying textures or features. This speaks to some of the difficulties in identifying rocks. One name geologists have for loose-lying rocks is float (as in, it's just floating around, also known as allocthonous). Context is king when identifying rocks- if they're still emplaced in their original outcrop (authocthonous), identification is a far, far easier task. [Image source]

Remember: The most important information you can give along with any photo to be identified is its geographical location. This narrows down the range of possibilities more than any other info you can provide.

Plants:
Along with the photo, add where you found it, the time of year, the approximate altitude, and any interesting scents or textures not caught in the photo.

Animals:
Along with the photo, add the location you found it, the time of year, the sounds it made, any interesting behaviors, and any other features not caught well in the photo.

Rocks:
Along with the photo, add the location you found it, a description of the terrain it was found in, whether it was attached to a rock outcrop or found loose on the ground or buried in the soil, a description of its texture (especially its grain size), and a description of its weight and density. Fossils are included in this category. (Despite my greatest expertise lying here, rocks tend to be some of the hardest things to identify in a photo.)

Fungi:
I will not be identifying mushrooms and fungi for foraging purposes. Mushrooms should really only be identified for foraging purposes in person and by an expert. If another contributor wishes to identify them, that's their call, but I encourage them to be similarly cautious. I might also try to identify a few fungi that are clearly not being looked at for the purposes of eating, but that'll be a case by case decision.

@artofwisdom, @shasta, @snowyknight, @bashadow, & @motordrive all earned @steembasicincome memberships for submitting to the last nature identification thread or helping identify submissions. Congratulations!

@marionbowes here is the identification post I mentioned!
And I also have an ID request for anyone who might know. This is in Denver, CO, so, 5280 ft above sea level, but probably not native because on a manicured lawn in a wealthy neighborhood. Anyone know what these flowers are? I'd love to know! 💛

@phoenixwren 🌸
Your pretty flowers look like Aozoaceae's Ice plants

Ooh, they do! Thank you! 😃

Most welcome! :-)

Beach float and flotsam are sure fun to
browse through on a nice walk, fill the
pockets and bags! 💎 :-)

Anyone know what kind of owl this is
and what gender, male or female?
Sometimes I can tell with eagles,
the female will have a less robust head.
This owl was spotted in south central
Alaska, July 16th 2018 🐥 A Bird Of Prey
Zoomed in shot, I was about 100 feet away.

No who hoot no sound, Just a heck of a stare!

horned owl!!!! I would know that from several miles away!!!
Does that seem right?

Sorry for lack of contact, been offline!

Thank you great @snowyknight of the north!!
Good to hear from you! Was wondering
if you were filling the rock bags 💎 pockets! :-)

I think you are correct, looking up some images with
the name you provided, I see many that look like
what I seen. Got a sideways shot where he looks
like a great one horned unicorn owl haha.

Awesome! I was certainly filling up the hard drive with new photos! Glad you think it is the great horned owl! Cheers!

Same here! more clicking camera than keyboard lol
Looking forward to you showing us your awesome finds!

Me too! Just need some time to download. Less keyboard - more photos!!! Hahaha

PS. I believe the real name is "great horned owl"...

Beautiful flower @artofwisdom! I tried looking it up
but no luck finding one that looks like this flower, leaves
and stalk. It somewhat reminds me of a hibiscus in the
flower shape. A hollyhock in the way they are arranged
on the stalk. The leaves are somewhat between a
fireweed and thisel like.

What area of Poland was this found? Did it look like
it was natural along the road or could of been seeded
when there is road work done? Sometimes green
seed stuff is put on the soils after road work and lots
of non native things grow. What type of soil would
you say it was growing in?

Sure is a nice looking plant and hope someone
tells us the name! 🌺 :-)

Great answer and who is @gentlebot

I know @haikubot and some other famous bots but @gentlebot sounds well.... gentle.

gentle bot, come out
come out come out come out now
we want to see you

PS. Agree with the thistle interpretation... hairy, etc... looks like it may sting!

Ok good to know... no sting then is helpful info!

i don't know much of the soil details, it was found in suburbs of Bydgoszcz city (northern Poland) among some wild flowers and grass like plants, at the end of the gravel backroad that leads to garages, there was some households nearby, could be a wild spread of some ornamental plant, no clue, 2 more pictures:
