A Fourth State of Water?... Going Further Than Just Liquid, Solid, and Gas

The Fourth State Of Water...

As a quick introduction: Early on, as children we learn that water has 3 phases; its liquid, gas and solid state. So it was brow-raising news to me when I heard that it is well established that there is a fourth state of water. The idea of "structured" water has been theorized for more than 300 years, though the concept still faces much mainstream resistance. Without going into the history and politics of the science, I want to dive into and address the basic research. With that being said, what is structured water?

Structure and formation...

Firstly, this fourth phase is most commonly referred to as "structured" water but has other names such as "EZ" or "organized" water. Secondly, this fourth state of water is NOT exactly H2O but rather, more precisely is H3O2. The hydrogen and oxygen molecules arrange themselves into a hexagonal patterned sheet which can build up, increasing the area of the water that is structured. These sheets or "EZ layers" are called such because of its property of excluding solutes which form an "exclusion zone", hence "EZ".

The diagram above demonstrates a method that generates EZ water. If water is against a hydrophilic surface(nafion is a commonly used material in this example), in this case the "material", the water self-organizes and generates layers of structured water along that surface.

Another way to think of formation of EZ water is considering the freezing of water. It is essentially a gel-like, in-between phase of ice and liquid H2O, meaning that when ever you freeze water it must first become structured and when the ice melts, it will become structured water before disorganizing into "bulk water"(non-structured, normal water). This would make sense considering that ice also excludes particulates and has a similar hexagonal structure.

Light...

An even more implicative property of H3O2, regarding formation, is its relationship to light. Experiments show that when light hits the exclusion zone, it grows. In both the following photos, the water contains microspheres(tiny particles) in the darker region and the exclusion zone is lighter because it is free of those particles.

In the first picture, a light bulb is pointed directly at the EZ and it expands.

In this second picture, the exclusion zone is shown to increase up to several hundred micrometers with only increasing light exposure.

Actually, all light builds EZ water with different wavelengths being more or less effective in doing so.

As shown above, the rate at which the EZ grows is directly effected the wavelength of the light. Light of the infrared spectrum being the most effective at generating the exclusion zone(though data not provided, near infrared light, specifically, is said to be the most effective of the infrared spectrum).

Charge...

Another unique property of EZ water is that it also has a net negative charge. Regular water has a neutral charge but not structured water. When the EZ forms, hydrogens are pushed out, giving the zone an overall negative charge. This creates a potential difference in charge, meaning that the water can function as a battery.

All Its Properties...

In summation, these characteristics define and set apart structured water:

-EZ water molecules are more restrained (NMR)
-EZ molecules are more stable (infrared radiation)
-EZ molecules have a negative charge (electrical potential)
-EZ molecules absorbs at 270nm (light absorption spectrum)
-EZ molecules are more viscous (falling ball viscometry)
-EZ molecules are aligned (polarized microscopy)

Biologic Relevance...

It is speculated that the water in your cells don't exist as regular, bulk water but as structured H3O2. Structured water is the medium that allows proteins and lipids to function properly and cannot without it, which could have unfathomable implications to our health and our understanding of biology in general.

Most people have heard that humans are 2/3 water but did you know that nearly 99% of all your molecules are H2O? Compared to the vast majority of your molecules, H2O is very tiny, which is why it is the most abundant molecule in your body, BY FAR!..

A special thanks to Dr. Gerald Pollack at Washington University for doing this research and spreading it. Please, watch and share his lectures on EZ water. Here is a video to those who maybe intrigued further.
