The interior of the area was also occupied at the same time by various groups such as the step tribes and steppe empires. Later, the Mongols and other lands adjacent to the Crimea were united in the territory of Crimea during the 15th to 18th centuries.
In 1783, as a result of the war between Russia and Turkey, Crimea was occupied by the Russian Empire. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Crimea became an autonomous republic in the Soviet Union.

Later, during World War II, Crimea deported all of its indigenous population, the Crimean Tatars, to the Crimean province of Central Asia. This Crimean act was recognized by many countries at the time, such as Ukraine, as a great genocide.
The Crimean peninsula was later transferred to Ukraine from the Soviet Union in 1954. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was re-established as an independent state in 1991, and the Crimean peninsula began to reorganize as an autonomous republic.

During the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution, which ousted then-President Viktor Yanukovych, Russia intervened and deployed troops on the Crimean peninsula .
Then in the same year, an illegal referendum on Crimea's alliance with Russia was held, and the vote was approved by 90 percent of the people. This happened while the referendum was completely illegal and was rejected by the United Nations, but after that, Russia formally declared Crimea its ally.
The situation in Crimea is still unclear, and Ukraine still claims ownership. Many other countries also consider Crimea part of Ukraine.
