So, by now you will probably have heard that the NBA is in talks of changing the Playoffs format. Let's discuss the benefits and the drawbacks for fans as well as the players, and even the League itself.

The regular season will stay as it is and the 8 best teams of each conference will be in the Playoffs. However, the seedings will be changed to 1-16 once the regular season ends. So while you still have 8 teams from each conference, east and west teams can face off against each other in the first round. This is just an idea that the NBA is discussing. There will definitely be major changes to this system if it is implemented.

Pros

The 2 best Teams will be in the finals.

Pretty self explanatory. If the 2 best teams are both in the same conference, they will still be playing in the finals.

Inter conference rivalries

Rivalries don't form in the regular season. If you look back at past rivalries, they are mostly contained within the same conference. With the new system rivalries are a lot more likely to form, since a team faces a bigger pool of teams.

Cons

More Travel

The USA is quite big. Traveling from one coast to another is challenging for teams. That's the whole reason conferences exist in the first place. You face teams that are near to your city more often than the ones that are far away. Removing conferences will make travel even more challenging for players. The NBA would need to lengthen the Playoffs which means they need to shorten the Off-Season and or Regular-Season. They could also just get rid of Pre-Season like everyone has been telling them for years.
