Wonderful hand dyed yarn by @neumannsalva and another lap blanket - 040219
Good morning, #Needleworkmonday !
I was so surprised by a present I received from @neumannsalva last week that I needed to show it to you.
It’s a wonderfully hand dyed skein of wool yarn you can see in the photo above. She actually used food colouring and I am sure you will agree that the colours are truly ‘yummy’.
Together with the yarn came a card which is made of wood ! Wow ! It’s beautiful too :
I sent a couple of little friends to accompany @neumannsalva during her hard times and didn’t expect to receive anything back - thank you again.
A wonderful thing about the #needleworkmonday community and steemit is that you can make friends that share your interests and passion for making things with wool. I truly appreciate this one-of-a-kind yarn and I will come back to post what I manage to make with it :D
I think it will be a lacy / floaty scarf to summon an early spring and brighter times !
I’m happy to report that I’ve now completely exhausted the thick bright green yarn I had and managed to extend it by combining it with another really thick yarn and made this wavy effect.
The nice thing about knitting lap blankets is that you get the benefit quite quickly :D
@jen0revision spotted me knitting and keeping warm at the same time :D
That’s all garter stitch with regular increases and decreases.
I used size 8mm knitting needles and super chunky yarn. I aimed for 55 stitches (give or take a few :D.
I had 2 stitches for the edge at each side.
Knit two together
Knit three
Make 1
Knit 1
The body of the blanket was just:
Make 1
Knit 3
Knit three together
Knit 3
Make 1
These blocks were separated by 1 stitch. As long as I kept to this ‘pattern’ and changed the colour every so often I got the wave.
It looks quite effective.
Thank you for reading and being there !
Thank you to @crosheille for starting #needleworkmonday and @muscara, @shanibeer, @marblely for hosting it .
Oh wow my heart! 🥰❤️ I just love this community and everyone in it! You ladies are what makes it all worth coming here every Monday to share! How sweet and thoughtful of her to send you a thank you card and gift while still in the midst of her sadness. @neumannsalva you are a beautiful being! The yarn is soooo beautiful and I know whatever you decide to make will be gorgeous!
Now that’s my style, keeping warm while doing needlework...it’s a win win for sure! That blanket looks so thick and warm, great way to use up that yarn. I like the design too! 😊
Thanks, @crosheille 😊
The lap blanket was quite 'heavy' to knit actually; the pattern kept me going - and now @jen0revision has asked me to make one for her too so I need to strengthen my muscles !
Oh wow! Well we have another benefit to add to needlework...muscle building! 😄😉

Uhhh I am blushing while reading your post and all the lovely comments from @shanibeer, @muscara, @akipponn and @crosheille <3 <3 Gifting hand dyed yarn is simply a very convenient excuse for me to dye more of it. I so love to work with all these colors and later to be surprised how its knit/crochet up. I am looking forward to your project, but do not feel pressured to use/post about it.
And with your blanket: this looks like a workout for me :-D handling such a big project with so thick needles is perhaps as strenuous as lifting weights. The vibrant green is wonderful, and the waves of lilac are enhancing its bright colour.
Your little animals are still observing me while knitting and sewing and the Wandering LLama will guest star in today’s post.
I wanted to write a bit myself, as my father is now feeling a bit better (although I know it’s only temporally)
hugs
Yes, it would be great to see what colour combinations you can come up with, @neumannsalva.
I'm really happy that the little friends are keeping you company while you knit 😄 - I admire your sock knitting and totally understand the need to adapt patterns and the finishing... to then try and replicate the changes for a second sock will be hard ! Hugs
oh noooo I am tempted to dye... (But I think it is better done in summer, as the yarn needs so much time to dry)
And with the socks, they are really not so difficult to make as they look (You know I was so intimidated). I now have a big sock book and your sideways/flat method is also mentioned :-)
The hand dyed yarn is gorgeous, what a lovely surprise! I really like, not just the colours, but the proportions of them and how they are distributed across th yarn. It will be fascinating to see the garment you make with it: an airy scarf sounds perfect.
I like the lap rugs, perfect kntting for chilly weather and the right balance between keeping you engaged and the pattern not being too demanding 😊
I hope you are feeling much better x
Thank you, @shanibeer - currently exhausted but I'm pushing myself to keep going :D
The yarn is soooo beautiful! It should make a lovely shawl :)
I really have to start dyeing...

I agree, @muscara. I especially like the fact the dyes are edible so they're not contaminating :D
If I ever do dyeing, it will be with natural dyes and mordants :D
I know several people who dye with KoolAid (the sugar free one). It's sold in Germany mainly for that purpose + not as a beverage.

I guess it's got to be sugar free because you microwave it, @muscara - I guess...
yeeeeees you should: it will lead to an instant addiction :-D
Do you use sugar free because it's got to in the microwave, @neumannsalva ? Oh, that would be a good video tutorial :D
I remember someone called @luthvarian used to do really nice posts on textiles adventures like dyeing and spinning :D
I think I have written a very old post about dyeing... I hope I will have more time on Thursday, I will try to find it then
I have used a powdered food coloring I mixed with acid and water
There is no sugar in this color. The other colors were liquid and from a Netherlands store, also without sugar... I guess sugar will felt the wool
Thank you, @neumannsalva - not that I'm planning to start dyeing 'yet'... :D
Ohhhh loook I found one old post on my Wordpress blog. This was my first attempt with wool which is made for spinning (scratchy) and was already dyed.
Maybe this helps a bit

Oh, that's so interesting : no microwave ! It sounds really cool to do - I'm being tempted to start something new here, @neumannsalva, but I'm not colourist. It's really interesting to read about this process because I normally see people either microwave or 'boil' in a pan (without stirring), but I hadn't read about baking the fibre.
Great yarn from Neumannsalva! The color, combination ... totally Neumannsalva style and it made me smile :)
And I understand that working with thick yarn is something different. I worked with 8mm & 10mm needles last week and I felt like a kind of physical exercise. Good luck for the blanket!
Oh, the blanket is finished now, @akipponn - the wonders of thick yarn : it all grows fast.
wow !!!! you have already done so much !!!! looks very bright and festive. In summer, if it is hot, such a blanket cannot be knitted, but in winter you really get warm already while working :))) I also really like the color of the yarn which you received as a gift. I will wait for you to make it
I have already used the blanket as the seats of the car are really cold in the mornings, @tali72 :D
Lovely yarn @neumannsalva
No good deed goes unpunished. @cryptocariad Or something like that lol
You're right, @steven-patrick ! Good to hear from you :D
Than youuuuu 💕🙏🏻 It is so much fun to dye wool. And @cryptocariad little friends brought so much joy, I couldn’t resist to send something back 😍
What a beautiful dyed yarn! I think your idea for a light scarf is perfect for it.
I love the lap blanket, too! It looks so thick and warm.
Yes, it is beautiful yarn, @phoenixwren. I'm looking forward to knitting it - I just need to finish another scarf first :D
Oh, and thank you for your support upvoting my response, @phoenixwren :D
I'm a big comment upvoter. I just hope everyone uses @dustsweeper with small as my votes are nowadays! ;)

It's the actual principle that counts in my book, @phoenixwren :D
I only posted to say 'thank-you' about the yarn; the amount I've received recently doesn't really reflect my work or effort so I've already given up.
I love the beautiful vibrant colors in your lap blanket. The yarn that you were gifted is also fabulous. I can’t wait to see what you create with it.
Thank you, @jluvs2fly - the lap blanket it's actually quite heavy and warm :D
