A meeting of NFL and NFLPA executives, the players 'union, team owners, and some of the players' leaders decided to reject any rule that would force players to stand during the national anthem.

In a joint statement from the NFL and the NFLPA, they said the meeting was productive and focused on discussing how everyone can "work together to promote positive social change and target inequality in our communities."

In the text, the parties stress that "everyone in the NFL community has enormous respect for the country, flag, anthem and military," and that "in the best American tradition" they will work together to find a common ground and commit to working hard to achieve such changes.

Last week, ESPN released a letter to teams confirming that team owners should discuss a possible rule change requiring players to stand up at the time of national anthem execution, as is already the case, for example, in the NBA.

Colin Kaepernick's protest, which sat and then knelt during the anthem last season, was the subject of harsh criticism from President Donald J. Trump and provoked a mobilization every league a few weeks ago.
