The March for Lobster Life

in #news7 years ago

Last week, Switzerland banned the boiling of live, conscious lobsters. The new law came as the result of a recent study that "suggests lobsters are sentient with advanced nervous systems that may feel pain." here

Speaking of things that are sentient with advanced nervous systems that feel pain, today is the 45th annual March for Life.

Call me old fashioned (bigoted, misogynistic, what have you), but this seems the height of lunacy. Yet, it's basically a hallmark of modern western civilization. We decry the inhuman treatment of animals while we slaughter little humans. It's somehow abhorrent to boil lobsters, but we seem to have no problem boiling babies.

We seem awfully confused. We've got things backwards. But, when you abandon The Truth, the abandonment of truth is sure to follow.

Of course, some of my readers will object. And you have your reasons. Please, allow me to address some of them:

It's imposed morality! Your beliefs shouldn't override my freedom.

All law is imposed morality. The same could be said of domestic abuse - prohibiting John Abuser from beating his wife and children is also an imposition of morality, but I'm sure we're all on board with overriding his freedom. It's not a matter of whether or not morality will be imposed, but of which morality will be imposed, of whose morality will be imposed.

Abortions will still occur, they will just be done in back rooms and dark alleys. If we know it's going to happen anyway, shouldn't we at least make sure it's safe?

Perhaps. And while we're at it, maybe we should require background checks on hit men and have police oversee drug deals, lest someone get mugged or take bad heroin. I mean, if we know these things are going to happen anyway, shouldn't we at least make sure they're safe?

The world is already so full of children needing homes. To bring them into a world that doesn't want them and isn't prepared for them would be cruel.

Crueler than killing them? Well, shoot... if that's the case, maybe we should just start killing off all the people who are suffering or unwanted. Perhaps we can start with people who don't contribute to society or might harm others, like those with severe disabilities. If anything, it's merciful. It's kinder to them. And it's better for the world. And no, that's in no way reminiscent of Germany in the late 1930's.

Nobody should have the right to dictate what happens to my body but me!

Does that right extend to others' bodies, or just your body? Because you certainly seem to think you have the right to dictate what happens to the baby's body.

It's lump of cells, for crying out loud!

So are you. Biologically speaking, you are literally a lump of cells.

This is a women's rights issue. Women should have the exact same rights as men.

1) Agreed. Women should have the same rights as men. And the right to murder someone else shouldn't be on the list. 2) Agreed. Women should have the same rights as men. And half of the babies being aborted are little women that should have the right to grow up and have the exact same rights as men.

Look, of course we don't want a young girl, scared out of her mind, just trying to rectify a wrong choice, to go into some sketchy, cash only "doctor" and put herself in serious jeopardy. Her life matters. And so does the baby's.

If the problem is providing support for young mothers, let's work on that. If the problem is improving the adoption process, let's work on that. But let's not make murder legal just because it's the easiest solution. Let's not sacrifice one victim for another; let's help them both.
