GAZA - Israeli jet fighters bombarded a tunnel between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on Saturday night. The bombed tunnel was allegedly the infrastructure used for Palestinian militant Hamas activity.

The Israeli Defense Force confirmed that its aircraft carried out an attack on "terror infrastructure" in the Rafah region south of the Gaza Strip. However, the Israeli military declined to comment on what exactly the target was bombed.

Generally, the tunnels between Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula are used to transport commercial goods to avoid the Israeli and Egyptian blockade. In some cases, the tunnel is used for the distribution of weapons from the outside to the Gaza Strip. "The Hamas terror organization is responsible for all activities in and from the Gaza Strip," the Israeli army said in a statement, as quoted by the Times of Israel on Sunday (14/1/2018). The attack came shortly after the Jewish state's military announced it would not open the Kerem Shalom Intersection into the Gaza Strip on Sunday, following a "situational review". The military said the decision not to open the crossing - which is usually passed by hundreds of truckloads of goods every day - was made after widespread unrest occurred along the security fence that surrounds the region 's coastal enclave on Friday.

This is the second time in less than a month The Keral Shalom Crossing is illegally closed by Israel. Previously, the reason for the closure was to force the militant group Hamas back quietly into the Gaza Strip.

On December 14, after several rocket attacks from Gaza, Israel also closed the Keral Shalom Crossing. In fact, the pathway is important for access in and out of the Gaza Strip.
