NASA's 40 Billion Dollar Astro-Sailboat
I really like the concept behind this project. I really do. NASA is using lasers to push tinfoil through space! On the foil-like sail there will be sensor that beams information back to earth as well as controls the sail uses to move in space. In theory this in a really cool project.
And a really cool project is all this will ever be. I hate being a negger of science. However, the amount of money being poured into this NASA project is irresponsible considering it's a usual socialist NASA project doomed from the get-go. A bunch of whitecoats think lasers and tinfoil is the answer to space travel? And someone believed them?
The entire project rests on the idea that a thin metal sail can sustain inter-galaxy travel through multiple comet belts, with a single direction propulsion force (the laser). Because this was thought to be a good idea by some fat wallets, NASA gets to play with these solar sails in our outer atmosphere. I have to admit its probably a lot of fun to shoot lasers at a star sail, and I obviously don't know the details of this project, but I think there are plenty of fast moving pebbles in space to back me up on this one.
Have you ever tried sailing? It has to be really hard in space.
Yeah, I was thinking how can you steer. Iv'e heard of this concept before. Im sure that there will be some things that can be learned from this experiment and applied for future advancements in space travel or NASA wouldn't do it as they have limited funding and would be very selective on the projects they do do.
