Tech News: Meet the Nintendo Labo!

in #news7 years ago

You have to give Nintendo credit. They've had to re-invent themselves quite a few times over the years, but somehow they've managed to continue on being a giant in the gaming world. Usually taking the road less taken and coming up with devices that are usually unique. Always aiming for a different demographic than the other systems out there. And their newest upcoming addition is no different.

Meet the Nintendo Labo!

To be used with an existing Nintendo Switch console, the Labo builds upon that foundation... literally. The user is required to actually "build" their game out of the cardboard cutouts that come with the kit. It all comes together as some sort of high tech / low tech package where cardboard and Switch controllers combine to create a fully functional piece of gaming hardware. Nice to see them promoting an actual physical creativeness, giving kids or adults a project to do before they can start playing. Building dexterity skills and instruction following skills is never a bad thing. All in all I was impressed to see what they had come up with. Pretty cool stuff. At around $70 USD per game, time will tell if it is well received or not. Regardless, you can't fault Nintendo's efforts to push boundaries.

Did you notice the realease date was April 20th, or 4.20? This is no coincidence, these guys were definitely stoned when thinking of this concept. Jokes aside though, there are some brilliant people over at Nintendo. Nobody else even come close to thinking up some of the stuff they do plus you have to give them credit for releasing these products that are risky because they could easily be a failure.

Ha, didn't realize the release was a 4.20 related one. On purpose or not, we'll never know! They've got some balls on them that's for sure, and more often than not they pull it off. They could have easily went the way of sega/atari and faded away but good on them for continuing to innovate and push boundaries.
