Steemit, learn to get better at THINKING and DISAGREEING with people

in #news7 years ago

I interviewed Christopher DiCarlo again, and he is excellent on the topics of critical thinking, disagreeing, debating, changing minds, all in a polite way. Check out the interview and let me know YOUR techniques for effectively disagreeing with people.

Philosopher DiCarlo's mention of Socrates is ironic in regards to how best to interact and communicate with others on sensitive subjects, politics, etc., when you consider how Socrates was condemned to death for his attempts at teaching the youth to think for themselves and question what is truth. Socrates may have been a great teacher, but lost his life because he could teach his students, but not their stodgy parents. Even so, from his school came Plato and then Aristotle. But at a great cost.

I enjoyed your dialogue with DiCarlo. You, too, are a good speaker and philosopher!

Thanks very much, appreciate the kind words!

I disagree!!!

Kidding. Sometimes, it feels like too much of an echo chamber and this is true with everything, not just SteemIt. Disagreement sharpens knowledge and helps us see our arguments in different ways.

No doubt, assuming they're taking place in a productive way

Nice interview! For me, I think you need a good quantity of tactfulness to disagree with people politely.

People have never been that good at disagreeing with others; it's almost human nature to fight for your beliefs.

That is a comparison I haven't heard yet, comparing religion to drug addiction. But yeah, I think it's a good one. It might be a bit extreme, but I think it works in a lot of cases.
