Breaking the Armistice in Daraa, US Threatens the Law of Syria's Regime
The United States (US) threatened to be assertive if Damascus violates the truce in Daraa. The Daraa region is currently enjoying a negotiated ceasefire after a meeting of US President Donald Trump and his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin in July 2017.
The region, known as the "birthplace of the revolution" during Arab Spring in 2011, is now largely controlled by various anti-government organizations.
"We also warn the Syrian regime against any action that risks expanding the conflict or jeopardizing the ceasefire," State Department spokesman Heather Nauert was quoted as saying by Al Arabiya quoted by Sindonews on Sunday, May 27, 2018.
Nauert noted that the ceasefire had been reaffirmed by Washington and Moscow in November.
"As the guarantor of this de-escalation region with Russia and Jordan, the United States will take firm and appropriate action in response to the violations of Assad's regime," he added.
Earlier this week, a spokesman for the Syrian Army General Command announced the complete liberation of Damascus after ISIS terrorists were ousted from their remaining camp in al-Yarmouk district in the Syrian capital.
Daraa province, where the first anti-government riots began in 2011, is now only partially controlled by Damascus, while many armed factions and terrorist organizations, including ISIS, are present in the region.
