Tamed by Sensation
The News bombards us daily with a constant stream of raw data. Repeat a story over and over in different guise and even the differences get missed. The wheel revolves ever forward ploughing a long furrow of stamped moments! As the imprint is rolled out, the ‘postage’ stamp is affixed to the ‘letter’ of meaning, posted, filed and forgotten almost as quick as it comes in.
History has no room to inform in this constant memetic frenzy that is the ‘News Streams’, and when it gets old? well, it's not 'news' anymore; it fades in the memory as does the postage stamp that got lost in the post. The moment fades, memory is fleeting, especially when situated in the culture of super-accelerated change. This one oversight can point to the exploitation of ‘information’ dissemination which is crucial to our modern world. The saturation with ‘news’ can be exploited, not by ‘fake news’ but by saturation itself.
Consider 911 – the event saturated the News for months until it became boring and irrelevant as the meme of the ‘war on terror’ took over, and then ‘Climate Change’, Iraq, Syria – on and on the wheel turned and only the very few were patient enough to remember history and its questions – the rest addicted to the ‘new News’ with the veracity of a junkie and the insight of a monkey. The ‘banana’ just out of reach to those blinded eyes!
Now is the generation of ‘instant’ – the moment is an endless stream of ‘nows’ with no true comprehension. As the search for New(s) stimulates like a great itch until its too much and we become ‘comfortably numb’ just staring at the picture; a mesmerized media Monkey looking for its next banana!
