RE: Kids Injured as School Cop Shoots Gun in a Class—Officials Cover It Up, Wounded Kid Blows Whistle

in #news7 years ago

Very good points. I would only add an appeal to extend your understanding of firearms safety a bit.

" It is obvious that guns are dangerous, and that is why they should be handled with care."

I point out that it is the most dangerous things that should be taught most rigorously, and this is why I began teaching my kids to drive (actually letting them drive on private property vehicles they purchased themselves) use chainsaws, and firearms, from a young age.

I had no worries about them using such technologies when I no longer had control over the circumstances in which they encountered them, after they turned 18. The US used to have ubiquitous marksmanship clubs in almost every school in the country, in the postwar period. The federal government still has, IIRC, programs to sell surplus military small arms to such clubs at discounts to encourage civilian marksmanship.

It's hard to characterize such training as harmful, or increasing the danger of firearms misuse. In fact it is blatantly obvious that lack of training is what is most dangerous about firearms. Want kids to be safe from firearms accidents, or psychopaths intent on shooting them? Teach kids how to use them, and then arm them.

They'll keep us safe. Our kids are heroes. Teach them how to, and trust them to do it.

Thanks!
