Mario Lemieux's greatest moment in hockey history.
By a large amount, fans have voted Lemieux 5 five goals five different ways the greatest moment in NHL history, recorded in 1988. Are you surprised? I am not. Hockey is growing in popularity in the US, and Mario Lemieux has had a huge impact in the eastern US, where is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player to ever play the game. This is in contrast to Canada where Wayne Gretzky usually enjoys more popularity, especially from the media and particularly in Toronto. But fans from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York and other eastern areas have had the chance to watch Lemieux on a regular basis (when he was no injured...). Gretzky is cited as the greatest hockey player of all time, which is fair to say given all his records and his charismatic personality in the media. But I have always believed that although Gretzky is the greatest, the best player of all time is Lemieux. Scotty Bowman once said that 'if a draft would take place that include any player from any era, how would you not choose Lemieux as the first pick'. So is the Greatest Moment vote an indication of that from the fans?
