Nigeria celebrates her democracy day, today 29th May 2018 in commemoration of her 19th years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

A Quick Look At Nigeria Brief History
Nigeria history can be traced back to prehistoric (Nigerian) settlers who have been living in the area since 1100 BC. Numerous ancient African civilizations settled in the region that is today Nigeria, such as the Kingdom of Nri, the Empire of Benin and the Empire of Oyo. Islam reached Nigeria through the Borno Empire between (1068 AD) and the Hausa states around (1385 AD) during the 11th century, while Christianity arrived in Nigeria in the fifteenth century through Capuchin and Augustinian friars from Portugal. The empire of Songhai also occupied part of the region. Lagos was invaded by the British forces in 1851 and formally annexed in 1861. Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. The colonization lasted until 1960, when the nationalist movement succeeded in gaining independence for its nation, Nigeria.
Nigeria became a republic in 1963 but succumbed to military power three years after a bloody coup. A separatist movement later formed the Biafra Republic in 1967, leading to the three-year Nigerian Civil War. Nigeria became a republic again after a new constitution was written in 1979. However, the republic was short-lived, when the military took power again four years later. A new republic was scheduled to settle in August 1993 but was once again dissolved by General Sani Abacha after three months. With the death of Abacha in 1998, a fourth republic was later established in the following year, which ended thirty years of intermittent military domination.
