Now Playing Week 29 - Songs I Am Spinning Today
These are some of the songs I'm spinning today. My musical tastes are all over the place but that's just how I roll. Variety is after all the spice of life and I like my life spicy. Hope you enjoy
Artist | Michael Franti & Spearhead |
Song | Stay Human |
Album | Stay Human |
Year | 2000 |
Wikipedia Link | Stay Human |
Michael Franti is a cool dude I've had the pleasure of hanging out with more than a few times and we smoked plenty of blunts together. Back in the day before he started his band Spearhead, he played in a hard-edged band called the Disposable Heros Of Hiphopricy. Once he started smoking herb he chilled out and Spearhead was born. Last time I saw them play was at a backyard private party at a friends house and they were as cool as ever.
I love the lyrics and the chill groove of this song and it's a great track for smoking trees in the summer breeze.
Artist | Black Eyed Peas |
Song | Sexy |
Album | Elephunk |
Year | 2003 |
Wikipedia Link | Elephunk |
Sergio Mendes piano playing on this track by the Black Eyed Peas is so smooth I never get tired of listening to it. This song was the song in the dance scene of the movie Get Shorty starring John Travolta and Uma Thurman.
Artist | George Clinton |
Song | Atomic Dog |
Album | Computer Games |
Year | 1982 |
Wikipedia Link | George Clinton |
Want to know where Snoop Dogg got his inspiration look no further than George Clinton, one of my favorite artists and innovators of funk. George Clinton of Parliament and Funkadelic is a great musician and producer and this song is where Snoop Dogg stole his name from.
George has produced so many records from Grand Master Flash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I opened for him once at the Exotic Erotic Ball in San Francisco and he was as cool then as he is now.
When the Red Hot Chili Peppers were asked who would they like to produce their second album without missing a beat they picked George Clinton.
Freaky Styley was recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit. Martinez recalled that "George had a party atmosphere in the studio all the time, but a productive party atmosphere. You took care of business, but he made sure you had a lot of fun doing it." The band and Clinton began using copious amounts of cocaine together, which had a negative effect on the band's overall health. When the time came for Kiedis to record his vocals, he decided to abstain from cocaine use for two weeks, an experience he likened to "deciding to be celibate when you're living in a brothel. Oh dude elephunk is such a good album! Awesome choice!!
Love those guys too. They write great music.
Here's a trivia question for you. Can you guess who their original female singer was before Fergie?
No I actually didn't even know there was a different female vocalist besides Fergie!
Macy Gray was their first vocalist before Fergie. She performed on "Love Won't Wait", a song on the Black Eyed Peas' debut album Behind the Front.
Thanks for entering this week's #nowplaying!

Spearhead is an awesome band and that whole album is really good.
Snoop Dog! , the name I was looking for during the past days and I wasn't able to find... maybe I still have an old playlist cassette that a friend of us used to build that included them. I wasn't aware from his sources, nice :P
I've enjoyed a lot your contrib, reading & listening @luzcypher ,
crazy recording studio sessions lol, thanks so much.
That's the thing about music. Everyone is inspired and influenced by someone else.
John Lennon put it best. When asked who were his musical influences growing up and if he borrowed from them, he said (I'm paraphrasing here) "Borrowed? No, we steal it. Borrowing implies it doesn't belong to you and you have to return it. We steal it and make it our own. It's not like we invented this music. After all, there are only 12 notes."
