One Thing that Living in New York City Has Taught Me
One thing that living in New York City has taught me is this: No one cares about anyone.
New York City isn't a melting pot. It's a boiling pot. It's a pressure cooker for people's dreams.
Living in New York City will force you to discover who you are and the pressure will shape who you become. New York City is an unstoppable force--a living, breathing entity that does not sleep.
This great pressure cooker that is New York City, with it's vast steam engine with its pistons pumping, wheels spinning, and belching smoke that hisses and sizzles, will shape you into the mold of the typical NYC denizen--the quickly-walking , well-dressed, expressionless character whose eyes are guarded by designer sunglasses and whose feet are cradled by comfortable and stylish footwear.
No one cares about anyone here. No one cares about anyone in New York City.
And this is the great tragedy and the great beauty of living in New York City. That no one cares about anyone.
This epiphany allows you to forge ahead unfettered by the cares of others because you know that, deep down inside, no one cares about anyone. You understand that no one cares about you. And, because of that, you might as well forge ahead and taking decisive action to move toward that goal of yours. And that is the great beauty of living in New York City.
At the same time, it is a great tragedy as well--to realize that no one cares about anyone.
People will come to you, when they want something, when they want the feeling that you've created that exists between who you are and who they are, the feeling that was planted months ago, when you tossed the seeds of your dreams into the barren fields that existed in the spaces between you and them. And, after hours and days and months of toil, when the flowers have broken the surface of the soil and released their fragrance into the air, those strangers and acquaintances and friends will follow that fragrance and wander your garden, following the rhythm of bees that arrive to pollenate the birth of Spring.
No one cares about anyone.
Let this motivate you.
To move in the direction of your dreams, unfettered by the cares of others.
