In a previous note, some time ago, I mentioned that I started making custom piñatas; this is going really well actually! (considering that there are many families with young children where I live) 🎁 🐣 🎉
✨ This hobby became unexpectedly quite profitable! ✨
This tutorial is made with the registration of the first order I made (>uvu)> 🎨 💕, sadly, the photos don’t have much quality because this "Melonie Pips" piñata was made on a very cloudy and rainy day ☔

« Watermelon Shopkin Piñata "Melonie Pips" »
The commissioned piñata was for a baby who turned her 1st year, so I looked for references among the franchises/toys that were trendy at the moment; and within the collection of the first "Shopkins" designs I chose the one that looked the most clean and sweet among them: 🍉 THE WATERMELON 🍉
But its original expression seemed quite ugly to me, so I looked for a template with different expressions of those characters so I could choose a more adorable one ~ 💝 👌

« STEP N° 1 »
• Body Construction •
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ Usually, I first make a paper pattern to be replicated in the final material, but for a matter of time, I drew the figure directly on the piñata cardboard.
✔ After that, when I was 100% happy with the drawing, I remarked the lines with a pen; then I erased the pencil lines, and I cut the first side.
👉 This first side will serve as a pattern to make the second side of the piñata 👈
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ Then, we take what will be the back side of the piñata, and we’ll draw a centered trapeze with the pencil, big enough to keep the toys inside the piñata (but not too much).
✔ We’ll cut 3 of its 4 sides with the cutter, and we will glue an inner cardboard tab in its narrowest side (top), this will avoid the "cap" to sink, and it’ll add resistance to the structure.
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ The opening to fill the piñata must have this shape (and not the classic rectangle) to resist the weight in a better way when it’s full. It’s also advisable due aesthetic reasons 💅 🌈
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ We will calculate the length we need to cover the total contour of the piñata with the help of the ruler (although it is easier using a measuring tape).
✔ According to the measure we obtain, we will cut and fix the strips of cardboard.
✔ This "mega cardboard strip", must include 2 cm extra in its width with respect to the measure that we have chosen for the depth of the piñata, and a minimum of 4 cm extra in its length.
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ We will mark 2 lines of 1 cm from each of the margins of the "mega cardboard strip", and we will make many small cuts between 1 cm to 1.5 cm wide.
✔ Those cuts will serve to make little tabs, that we must fold to the inner side of the cardboard.
👉 The function of these tabs is to facilitate the adhesion of the contour of the piñata to their faces, preserving the curves in the design. 👈
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ The first side to be installed is the back, because its opening is the weakest.
✔ For that, we will delicately place a bit of glue around the outer border of the cardboard side, and a little more of glue in the inner side of the tabs; we will wait 3 minutes before starting to join them together.
✨ 🎨 💡 IS TIME FOR THE PLUS 💡 ✨ 🎨
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ Before installing the second side, we will stroke again with a pencil and ruler a rectangle at the bottom of the margin/wall of the piñata, and cut with the help of the cutter.
✔ The inner edges of this rectangle are reinforced with cardboard strips, some glue and staples.

✔ The "Melonie Pips" Shape is very simple and clean; once the 3 pieces are assembled, the complete figure will be very stable and will stand on its own 💯 👍
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ With school glue, we will glue tabs of recycled thick paper on the edges of both sides for extra resistance.

👆 Including some at the bottom 👆

✔ With the silver wire and the gripper, we will create a hook like the one in the photos, and we will install it through the top of the piñata.
✔ Above, and to avoid it from moving loosely, we put a cardboard rectangle with a lot of glue and staples.
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ For greater resistance, the previous step is repeated but only with glue (for aesthetic reasons).
« STEP N° 2 »
• Little Fuzzy Paper Layers •
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ The installation of the paper must always be from the bottom up, with the layers being very close and with little glue so as not to damage the upper layers.
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ Those paper layers can be made cutting rolls of crepe paper of about 4 cm width, trying that the cuts are really close, leaving a line of more than 1,5 cm intact, and should be unrolled very carefully.

• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ For a more colorful effect, I used 2 different hues of fucsia, and 2 different hues of green, alternating colored paper strips between each layer.
✔ It is necessary to leave paperless places where the biggest details of cardboard go.
« STEP N° 3 »
• Cardboard Details •
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ For the eyes and seedlings, I drew an initial pattern freehand on regular paper. Then I used those patterns as a template and transferred the design to the black glitter cardboard.
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ For the blue circles (the irises), I lined a white cardboard disc with tissue paper, so that there was harmony in the transition of materials (I don’t like foamy nor the appearance of the painted cardboard).
✔ The eyes are composed of 4 parts: The base with eyelashes, the light blue iris, the black center, and a small white circle as a shine.
« STEP N° 4 »
• In case you don't want to kill the Watermelon... •
• Photos by @Tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2.
✔ To seal the bottom, we will cut 2 large rectangles of brown crepe paper. In the first one, we will staple the gift tape throughout its center, letting it get out from the opposite side just in the line that borders the inner edge of cardboard.
✔ The second layer is to reinforce the first one and support the weight of toys/candies when filled.

👇 The rectangle at the bottom of the piñata serves 2 functions 👇
a) The first one, it’s to be an alternative in case the Birthday kid doesn’t want to break the piñata (this happens more times than you can imagine), then, they would be able to pull from the tape attached to the paper to open the piñata and free all the toys (and save it from the horrible murder hahaha) 🔨 💀 💦
b) The second one, is to offer a gentle alternative to smaller kids who don’t have enough force yet or enough dexterity to break the piñata alone, on this case, the end of the tape is offered to the little one, who can tear the paper with little effort 💪 👶 🎈

The color looks different from photo to photo because the natural light besides being so little, it was very changing throughout the afternoon.

The colors of this piñata are much prettier in person, especially the iridescence of the glitter eyes and the little seeds.

🎀 A Happy Ending! 🎀
A lot of water ran beneath the bridge since May (you can see the date when the photos were taken in the notes above), but I could finally write this tutorial today.
I confess that I don't understand the love for these dolls, but this "LOL Dolls" and "Shopkins" fever is really strong, every little girl wants their Birthdays with those things’ thematic ó_ó;;
Maybe I was born at the SANRIO stage, so I prefer the "minimalist cute" designs in 2D, flats, and without exaggerations, but oh well, the client has the leading! ~
