Every face has a story to tell - #4
“She’s from a countryside in Sweden. And I’m from the bustling city of Bombay. She’s not religious at all, and my family is Islamic. And even though we’re poles apart -- I couldn’t have found anyone as perfect as her.
We met in Bombay through friends 4 years ago, and somehow we both ended up in New York at the same time. We hung out at the MET, where we walked around for an exhibition, pretending to take interest in the art, but we were just very curious about each other. Over the next 5 days, we bonded -- we went to museums, ate some lovely dinners and just talked. There was a spark between us -- so naturally, when I had the opportunity to kiss her… I ran!
But she decided to give me another chance. We started seeing each other regularly after returning back to Bombay. We hadn’t officially started dating, but both of us began to care for each other deeply. I’ll never forget how she went out of her way to get me two first-edition copies of my favourite author Kurt Vonnegut. Even I surprised myself...I knew it was too soon, but while I was returning from Amsterdam, I bought 200 Tulips… her favorite flowers only because she had mentioned it once.
We obviously started dating soon after. I fell for the little things -- her taking care of me, supporting my dreams, her drive, or even holding my head while I slept on the flight...she’s the most caring person I know. After I lost my mother, I became numb to the world. She has taught me how to care again.
And of course, when we got serious -- the questions began. ‘How does your Muslim family feel about you dating a white girl?’ or ‘Are you going to convert?’
But that’s always been irrelevant to us! Even my dad accepts her with open arms because she makes me happy and because we’re in love. Isn’t that what matters the most?
So when the time came to take this to the next level I knew what I had to do. Since she’s been away from family for so long, and misses her mom and sister -- I decided to take her back to her hometown and I proposed to her there. We’re getting married this year!
I still can’t figure out what she sees in me, but I thank her everyday for loving me the way she does. It’s cliche but maybe opposites do attract. Her capacity for love is limitless. And to be at the receiving end of it is surreal -- I feel like the luckiest man in the world!”
yes each face has a story, in fact different stories in different eyes.
