From History: Today's Famous Birthdays - 13/Aug/2018

1. Fidel Castro
Fidel Castro was a Cuban communist politician who was Prime Minister and later President of Republic of Cuba.
He was also the first secretary of Communist Part of Cuba from 1961 to 2011.
He worked as Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008, that means he was in rule either as PM or President from 1959 to 2008, i.e. a period of 49 years which made him the longest serving non royal head of a state.
He was known for his association with Che Guvera and their famous Guerrilla War against the Cuban government of the then Cuban President Fulgencio Batista.
That ousting of Fulgencio Batista paved him a way to lead military and political throne to become the Prime Minister.
He was honoured with International Lenin Prize, Hero of the Soviet Union, Order of Lenin and many other honours from many countries around the world.
2. Sridevi
Sridevi was an Indian actress and film producer who acted in movies of Bollywood and South Indian languages Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
She is often referred as Indian Cinema's first female superstar because of her popularity.
In her career spanning over 5 decades, she almost ruled the Bollywood singly during the peak of her career and has acted in blockbuster movies like Himmatwala, Mr. India, Nagina, Laadla, Judaai, English Vinglish and some South Indian blockbusters include Vetagadu, Premabhishekam, Moondram Pirai, Aakhari Poratam, Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari.
She was a recipient of India's fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri.
She was a winner of a National Film Award, 2 Filmfare Awards and 3 Filmfare Awards South.
3. Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock was an English film director and producer known as Master of Suspense because of the number of suspense thriller movies he directed.
His career as a director spanned over 60 years and he directed more than 50 movies during that period.
His directorial movies include The Pleasure Garden, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, Blackmail, Rebecca, Foreign Correspondent, Rear Window, Shadow of Doubt.
He was 5 times nominated for Academy Awards and received Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award during Academy Awards ceremony in 1968.
He won an BAFTA Award, a Director's Guild of America award, a Golden Globe Award.
He has a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.
4. Shoaib Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar is a former Pakistani cricketer who played all the formats of the game and is the fastest bowler.
He is known as Rawalpindi Express because of the speed with which he use to bowl.
He was also the first to break 100 mph barrier.
He is a popular figure among cricket lovers yet he is into controversies.
5. John Logie Baird
John Logie Baird was a Scottish engineer who was the inventor of colour television.
He was at 44th position among the list of 100 Greatest Britons published by BBC.
His other inventions include infrared night viewing, radar, fibre optics.
He had been inducted into Scottish Science Hall of Fame, Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.
