Little Truthful One

Original Song by @daily-musings

Oh little truthful one
You're caught up in a lie
Saying that it's dark
When I see sunlight outside

Oh little truthful one
You know you can smile
But the corners of your mouth
Are turned down at the sides

Could you try?
Would it kill you to try?
Could you smile?
Would it kill you to smile?

Oh little truthful one
Get out of your head
Telling me that your tired
When I know you you spent the whole day in bed
Mhmm

Could you try?
Would it kill you to try?
Could you try?
Would it kill you to try?

I'll be there soon
Is there anything you'd like to do?
I'll be there soon
Could you tell me what you're going through?

Could you try?
You don't have to close your eyes
Could you try?
I swear it's not always night

Oh little truthful one
You're caught up in a lie

...

This song is about coping with the depression of someone close to me. They usually are the person I look to for honesty and guidance, but their reality has been distorted for several months now. Their light has been dimmed, at least for the time being, and it's heartbreaking.

I always try to see the silver linings. I try to frame the experience as an exercise in patience and empathy. I try not to ask for too much progress, but still offer encouragement and resources. I try, I try, I try. And as hard as I try to be supportive, I'm an imperfect human and sometimes sadness turns into anger. Sometimes expectations turn into resentments. Sometimes love turns into pain.

My heart goes out to anyone dealing with mental illness or depression. I know there is no 'snapping out of it,' but please, for the sake of those that love you, try to take little steps forward. Talk to a therapist. Practice self-care. Take a bubble bath. Talk to people that love you. Get out of the house. Walk in the garden barefoot with the sun on your face. You are worthy of joy. You are full of divine grace. Your path is winding, but it has never been wrong. I'm rooting for you.

What an annoyingly beautiful song. True, depression can be a downer.

The best people in my life are equally split between people who have never experienced bad mental health, and people who have nothing but.

Thank you for listening @tigerlily321 :) Depression can be a downer for sure, or it can be a turning point experience for transformation I think. I'm hoping it's the latter in this case, even if it takes a long time.

Good of you to put words and music to the feeling of depression. I like the idea of "going into the darkness" and really facing the fears, the sadness, the grief... As a way of dealing with the emotional waves, hopefully surfacing with newfound love and lightness.

Thanks for the reply :) Love and lightness is what it's all about, but we certainly can't have light without the dark.

We certainly can't have light without the dark.

Indeed. Yes, I'm learning the importance of shadow work. You said it straight, sister. #truth

I agree with @tigerlily - beautiful song and a great voice you have as well.

Certainly felt the emotion of this and I know what it's like to have depression. You feel like the loneliest person in the world, trapped in a cage of your own thoughts.

I started to use an app called Headspace, which I've found pretty helpful for mindfulness but you're right, going outside, walking, exercising, just living in the moment are what life should be about. Another book called "You are a badass" has helped me through too.

But back to the music, I was wondering if you would be OK for me to work with you on this song or, if you have recordings of the guitar and your vocal, for me to make an uplifting drum & bass version of it? No pressure of course, just a thought as I felt the emotion of this one :)

Thank you @nickyhavey

Glad to hear you found some helpful tools to manage the depression. "You're a Badass" sounds like a book I need to read :) I've felt it too at times, and meditation, yoga and good books were my weapons of choice. I'm a chronic over-thinker, and that can get me into trouble sometimes.

Yes I would love to work with you on this! I recorded the vocals and guitar on the same mics, so it might not have as many options as if it was recorded separately but I would be happy to send you the audio file. Let me know the best way to send it to you. One mic is clipped to my shirt, and the other is on the camera.

If I was able, I'd like to re-record it this week with better audio quality, however I'm traveling out of the country tomorrow for a yoga teacher training, so we could just work with what I have so far.

Definitely a book you need to read! I have read it twice and go back to it whenever I need a kick up the a** to do something! Click the image below, it will take you to Amazon - that's what the book looks like :)

Ah yoga! I think I downloaded an app for that called Down Dog, did one tutorial and did the whole "not doing it again" thing... Yes, I think things to death too, I need to train the other part of my brain to be like "stfu and get on with it" haha.

Ah awesome, thank you! We can see how it goes with the audio file from your microphone - please send it over to my e-mail: [email protected] or if that doesn't work, look for "nickyhaveyofficial" on Facebook and drop me a wetransfer link on there. I'll pick it up :)

Off again hey? Where are you going to be flying to? I'm also taking a leap of faith in April.

I will email it when i get a layover in Cork Ireland tonight! I'm heading to Barcelona, Spain for a month long yoga teacher training. Its a life goal of mine that ive decided to make happen this year. Hopefully traveling a bit around Europe afterwards too.

Where are you leaping to in April??

Well congratulations on working towards your life goal, I wish you all the best in your endeavour! I'm in the UK so if you're planning on visiting here in the next 8 months, let me know!

I decided to take a leap and go Down Under! Off to Melbourne in April so just working a couple of jobs at the moment so I have a bit of spending money out there! Laptop at the ready, blogging here we go :D

I look forward to that e-mail then! Have a safe trip :)

I will let you know if I make it to the UK, I'm thinking it'll probably be Ireland though :)

That's awesome you're going to Australia, I've heard nothing but good things about traveling there. Keep up the blogging and photography! Also, I know they offer work visas pretty easily (that's what some of my friends did) so it helps extend the travel and get to know the locals a bit too.

Sent you the files to your email!

I've only been to Ireland once and that was a work trip but remember it being very green!

I did a bit of travelling in 2015 round there but only a couple of weeks, this should give me a bit more of an immersive experience! Yes I think there's a short work visa and various other things you can get to work longer out there but we will see how I get on!

Got the files and thanks for sending them over, I'll keep in contact with you on there!

I too have people very close to me who suffer from depression, and the lack of knowledge and compassion from others is so disheartening. It's simply not something you can just snap out of like you say. Thanks for another great song and for a great message! Anything to bring awareness to mental health is a job well done :)

I'm going to send this to c-squared as well in the hopes of them paying you a visit :)

It's so widespread, but the societal stigma remains. The world needs more empathy and understanding for sure.

Thank you for listening amd sharing my music @lynncoyle1. You are appreciated ❤❤
