Why I Hate and Love the Steemit Open Mic Contest

in #openmic6 years ago

Hey Steemit,

As you can probably guess from the title I wanted to talk about the Open Mic contests that are held on Steemit. More specifically, why I hate and love them. If you are still here, read below to my musings.

Last week I was sitting down at my computer and I thought to myself, "it is about time I came up with a new competition, well I can't do singing because that is already done." This, I believe, is a completely reasonable thought. I don't want to be stepping on the toes of someone who has already created something excellent. I am no thief!

That is when I decided to do a google search for "Steemit Openmic". Well, this was a mistake. After a few minutes of reading I loaded my first video...

Yes that is right, I have now been consumed by the talent that have revealed themselves on Steemit. Now, my days are spent looking through the historical open mic competitions to find other talents that I have not yet found!

I HATE that a lot of these people are yet to be 'discovered' and are not famous. I HATE that all I want to listen to is talent from Steemit. However, I LOVE that I am listening to these great people, quite often on repeat.

So far my favourite artist is @kendramoriah. @kendramoriah, if you ever read this, thank you for creating such amazing music! You are incredibly talented. Also, not cool creating such good music now that now when I load YouTube I am always checking for new songs!

I am also a big fan of @johnbutler your voice is very unique. I like the almost, throaty cough sound behind your tones. I have listened to quite a few of your songs and I am not a huge fan of the punk/rock but things like Anything are absolutely bloody awesome! Great, now that I went and found the link to your song I have listened to it another 4 times!

So in summary, I hate that I am now spending so much time looking into the open mic contest. I hate that I am not talented enough to enter, because I really wish I could sing as good as a lot of these people. However I absolutely LOVE that people are so willing to be open with the Steemit community. They are ready to put themselves out there and show the world what they can do. So thank you everyone for entering and giving me something to listen to.

Also, I would like to say a massive thank you to @luzcypher for creating and managing the Steemit Open Mic Competition. Check out the comps on his page here

Thanks for the mention of Open Mic on Steemit. I'm sure you could enter as you don't have to be a superstar to participate. It's more about building community than anything else.

there is so much truth to this! i think we are all capable of so much more than we think. it took me years to realize this - and why at 28 years old i just started singing publicly and producing songs and singing when i couldve started ten years ago. its all about passion anyway, we shouldny let fear stand in the way!

I like that a lot and think it brings a lot of the community together... still not going to enter haha.

loved reading this post - and discovering some new music in the process. i think exposure for artists is so important, and im learning a lot about it - not jsut on steemit but everywhere: youtube, soundcloud, the radio, live performances, etc. its hard to get your name out there, but oh so rewarding when even one person tells you it touched their heart or moved them. its what add fuel to the fire :)

I really appreciate this post. I wouldn't hate the fact that undiscovered talent is still undiscovered though, it just wasn't our/they're time yet. Now steemit is here, and the reach is only growing. Now people that deserve to be heard can be. Awesome! Now its not a matter of "if", its just a matter of time. Thanks again for the post.

i hate that i have to work - one of these days i will get around to making a video

I hear you. I run a community for independent artists and the amount of amazing talent on it makes me so bummed out of the fact that what most people consume is just made produced garbage. Cudos to @luzcypher

Long live the independent scene!

I just can't keep up with all the music on Steemit these days, but I still have fun entering open mic and getting good comments. I met @luzcypher at Steemfest and we had a jam together. I don't think there's any video of that unfortunately.

Yeah there is a lot to keep up with, just too many great entries. Darn would have been great to see videos!

I am a singer-songwriter from Spain and I hope to participate myself in the Open Mic as soon as knowing how it all works. I barely landed a week ago. But it´s very sweet from you that you are doing a shout out to your musician discoveries.

Can’t wait to hear your first entry.

Thank you, I am setting up also to perform live from my studio, I will enter open mic too but so far I have seen you have to upload on youtube with a greeting and my youtube is so far a very "official releases" channel, but will create a list within the channel or something because it looks like fun. I need to read all the faq first. I have joined discord and networking to meet other musicians while I get ready.

awesome, this is great to hear, i too also love the openmic for exposing young talents out their to the world, and thank you much for taking your time hearing our entries.

Not a problem mate, thank you for sharing your entries!

I love the sentiment behind this post @necromortis. I have heard so many talented artists that will never get any air play, and outlets like Youtube, where people have had some success finding an audience are making it harder for people again. My father was a musician who got close but never made it, so I have been passionate about helping talented independent artists find an audience and make a living from their art for most of my life. I started a podcast here where I live in NE Oregon to help with that. It is also one of the main reasons I joines Steemit. I love to see people such as yourself who feel the same way. I am also very excited to hear about the new interesting innovations being developed here like the Open Mic Competition by @luzcypher and the new #Steemsongs app being started by @thisisbenbrick. I upvoted your post and am looking forward to following your content moving forward.

Hey mate, absolutely love the podcast idea. Sorry to hear your dad didn’t make it I’m sure he was great. Thanks for sharing and following :)

Very nice post about Open Mic and believe me it's even more fun when you participate and if I can do it, everybody can. ;)
