Steemit Open Mic Week 50 "When You And I Were Young Maggie" (cover)

in #openmic7 years ago (edited)

I thought this piece might make a pleasant melody for the pedal steel guitar as my contribution to the Steemit Open Mic Wk 50.

"Maggie", or to give it its full title, "When You and I Were Young Maggie" is a famous old folk song. Written as a poem by Canadian, George Washington Johnson, the story goes that Maggie (Clark) was his pupil. They fell in love and during a period of illness, George walked to the edge of the Niagara escarpment, overlooking what is now downtown Hamilton, and composed the poem. The general tone is perhaps one of melancholy and consolation over lost youth rather than mere sentimentality or a fear of aging. It was published in 1864 in a collection of his poems entitled Maple Leaves. They were married in 1864 but Maggie's health deteriorated and she died on May 12, 1865. James Austin Butterfield set the poem to music and it became popular all over the world. George Washington Johnson died in 1917. The schoolhouse where the two lovers met still stands on the escarpment above Hamilton, and a plaque bearing the name of the song has been erected in front of the old building. In 2005, the song was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

For anyone who likes a nice love lyric, I have included them here, although I am performing it as a steel guitar instrumental.

Maggie
(When You And I Were Young)

I wandered today to the hills Maggie, to watch the scene below,
The creek and the creaking old mill, Maggie, as we used to long, long ago,
The green grove is gone from the hills, Maggie, where first the daisies sprung,
The creaking old mill is still, Maggie since you and I were young,

Oh they say that I'm feeble with age Maggie, my steps are much slower than then,
My face is a well written page Maggie, and time all alone was the pen,
They say we have outlived our time Maggie as dated as songs that we've sung,
But to me you're as fair as you were Maggie, when you and I were young,

They say we have outlived our time Maggie, as dated as songs that we've sung,
But to me you're as fair as you were Maggie, when you and I were young,
When you and I were young.

I hope you enjoy my contribution to Wk 50 Open Mic and thanks to @luzcypher and his team for keeping on keeping on!!!

Hi there David, asks for the kind comments. 👍

I love it, @steelygeoff! Beautifully played

Nice song and a sad story of the creator of the original poem. Heard it for first time, but I felt the melancholy you mentioned, You played very well. Also, I saw this instrument for 1st time. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Sanjay. I hope you enjoyed seeing the pedal steel for the first time.

@steelygeoff how are you ? you are not around . I hope you are well my good friend :)

Thank you for asking David. I have a bit of a shoulder “issue" which makes playing quite uncomfortable from time to time. Apart from Which, I have had to do various things around the house here, garden and decorating etc. Anyway, I am hoping to perhaps do something for the next "session" . One of my personal feelings is that if I don't have time to listen to everybody's contributions and comment/upvote etc., it is possibly unfair to comment/upvote any. Of course,I realise my voting power is negligible when compared to some on Steemit. 👍😊

I hope you become good , I also have the same problem that sometimes I can't even sit ( because of back and neck hurts ) , it's too soon for my age but couldn't find any cure but only doing exercises for it .
it's ok brother , even a low power is good , just like my vote power , I was checking your blog and wanted to know how are you , cause I didn't see new posts on your blog .
peace :)
wish you luck <3
