This song was inspired by a saying that goes "You don't polish brass on a sinking ship". Today's culture is bombarded with this message in the media, news outlets and pulpits: that the world is ending, we're all doomed and there's no hope for the future. This fallacy produces a self-fulfilling prophecy where people believe there's no point in making an effort in their lives and in the world, thus leading to more negative consequences.

It seems the news and others are always talking about doom and fear. I think it keeps us coming back to see what is happening, so they can claim more viewers and sell more ads for us to see. Ads for medicine and material things that might reduce the stress and disease we get from being in this constant state of worry.
We get addicted to fear because we get a little adrenaline rush, like we do on roller coasters or at action or horror movies. So people make money selling us this mindset and we want to buy into it.
I don't think we're really on the Path To Decay. Steven Pinker writes that we are actually improving as a species over time, although obviously not in a straight line; there are ups and downs. It's good to be critical and evaluate the message we are receiving and not let them get us down to the point of not living our lives!
Yeah, people like to talk as if humanity is a single, unified entity that all goes down the same path together. We know that's not the case though. We're all individuals. Some will spiral down the path of self-destruction while others climb heavenward.
