I have Rats (Splinter & Wolfgang)

Having rats is amazing. They're intelligent, clean and very loving and socially interactive beings. It's hard not to fall in love with rats once you learn some facts about them. Rats usually get a bad reputation, unfortunately. I've realised that there are two types of people in the world. People who love rats and people who don't know enough about rats.

This image was taken on their first night with me. They're 3 months old at this point. As from the 14th Feb 2020, they'll be 5 months. Rats typically have a live expectancy of up to 2½/3 years old. They are omnivores. These guys are a mixed breed of ½ Dumbo & ½ Fancy.

Here they are enjoying a well-deserved treat. These guys have been on a strictly plant-based diet and have been really healthy. When I went to pick them up from the previous owner who could unfortunately not keep them. They had just finished off eating chicken. They had no history of health issues however I was sceptical as they had been purchased from a pet store. So I decided I was to rehome these guys and let them live out their best lives with me.

Sprinter is slightly on the heavy side but not dangerously obese, I will be monitoring his food and trying to encourage him to exercise more as he tends to be less motivated and is just a little chilled out then his brother Wolfgang.

Splinter is at a perfect weight at the moment, he has a lot more energy and is far more active so he can enjoy more food. I will be monitoring him very closely and have started to feed them one at a time with fresh fruit and vegetables every night. During the day they have an unlimited supply of rat block food if they wish to snack it. But I'm constantly providing them with a range of fresh food twice a day. They get around 2/3 hours of playtime outside the cage, most of the time they are free-roaming when im at home but if I've been out at work all day then they are happy to chill in their cage.
