Social Media and the Youth Seminar- Workshop a Success!

in #partiko5 years ago (edited)
Hello everyone and I am back with good news. I hope the same thing is happening to all of you as well.

Anyway, the project that I had been trying to work for the past few weeks has come to completion last February 29 and I must say it was a blast. I was able to reach the number of participants I needed and the other goals had also been achieved such as the participants were enriched with knowledge and skills needed for advocacy making.

Basically, this project of mine is a tie up project of mine for the Leadership Academy of YCU or Young Centrists Union and my baby project under JCI Bai Lawanen.

Here is some further details that will help you understand more about the said project:

I. Program Description, Objectives, and Purpose

The Young Centrists Union has been conducting numerous capacity building activities and political initiatives that target its vision “to develop Filipino youth leaders as champions for social change” in the Philippines. Its commitment to nation-building has been paralleled by unwavering efforts and partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung under the Centrist principles and political values. Hence, YCU ensures that we continue to capacitate future young leaders of different communities one step at a time through prototype programs on capacity building.

On this other hand, this project shall be a springboard project for the lead implementer for future projects with JCI Bai Lawanen, a non-profit international non-governmental organization that seeks to create positive impact in the community through civic movements.

Part of the design of the program is to empower young leaders of different who are active on Social Media for their involvement in different Korean Pop Fandoms through a seminar-workshop on leadership with Centrist Democratic Principles.

This project has been inspired by the small programs created by certain KPOP fan clubs such as feeding program and sending a number of food supplies to some displaced civilians living from Mt. Taal. In involving more fan clubs to civic movements, it is also enabling them to become more engaged citizens in solving minor and major issues in their respective communities.

II.Objectives

The following objectives are expected in this proposed activity:

- To capacitate young leaders to solve prevailing socio-political issues of Cagayan de Oro City with centrist democratic principles through the use of social media; - To recruit a few but dedicated new members for the organization, YCU Cagayan de Oro Chapter and entice the participants to join various civic group movements in the city to create a bigger ripple effect.

III. Expected Output/Results:

The participants are expected to become more goal-oriented driven in solving the prevailing problems in their respective communities and to use their fan bases to come up with projects that would solve some minor and major issues being faced by the youth in Cagayan de Oro City.

After the talk, the participants will be grouped and they would come up with projects proposals in line with their interests using different social media to campaign for their projects.

On the other hand, it is expected that there would be a few number of new recruits from the number of young leaders who joined the said activity.

The Participants, Organizing Team and Funding Institution:

The participants are the dynamic and active young leaders of different Korean Pop fan clubs in Cagayan de Oro City. They were chosen to be participants as their sphere of influence in the city is very broad. It has been evident during different Korean Pop Fan Fares and Korean Pop Conventions that were held few years ago. As an educator, I also know for a fact that by involving individuals to socio-political movements through certain civic movements, one of the best method is to capitalize on their interest which is KPOP. The organizing team includes the lead implementer and some of the staff of KPOP fan clubs, an unofficial group called Multi-fandom Fans.

Meanwhile, there would be no funding institutions but individuals who had pledged to support the said project. JCI Bai Lawanen has also pledged to support the said project.

Preparation

Part of the preparation is on looking for sponsors. I am just so glad that I have supportive friends and relatives. I am thankful for my father, Alfredo C. Tongco Jr., my brother Jose Alfredo, my aunts Evelyn and Fe, and my friends JR, Kim, Andrei, and Klayson. They all supported financially and helped made this project come into reality.

Aside from that, it took me days to find a venue. I have thought then of McDonald's Divisoria since it is just located in the heart of the city. Aside from that, it has most of the equipment I needed such as the LCD Projector.

In line with the supplies, I was only able to secure those two days before the event. I was able to create booklets that the participants could use, pencils, envelopes, and ballpens from McDonald's.

I also able to make name tags that the participants could use.

It took me a night though to make my presentation because aside from the fact that I am the project head, I would also be speaking in front of the audience and handling a small workshop.

Few days before the event, I also made advertisements that I posted online to remind the anticipating audiences.

I also posted the panel of speakers a day prior to the event. I think it looks aesthetic and decent enough.

Event Proper
And so the day has finally arrived. I wasn't scared but instead I was so excited on what is about to happen. I am just glad that some of the participants, who are also my friends arrived earlier than the expected time. They helped with the preparation of the venue.

Event Proper
It was Pearl who spoke first about the Importance and Threats of Technology and Social Media. It was then followed by my talk on the Roles of Social Media in Nation-Building, which was then followed by a mini-workshop on Advocacy Making. I am just impressed on what they were able to accomplish.

The first group wanted to work with the issue of Solid Waste Management for the environment.

This group wanted to advocate on Mental Illness.

Meanwhile this group wanted to focus on Teenage Pregnancy.

Lastly, this group wanted to work on financial literacy.

Presentation of Different Groups on their Youth Advocacies

I am just so glad that despite the fact that a number of the participants are introverts, they opened up themselves to others and shared their insights.

The last topic then is a bit out of the main topic but is also an important issue, Ending the Nightmares of Depression. It was RO Shing who introduced the signs of depression and the possible ways to get rid of it.

After the said talk, JCI Bai Lawanen then launched the END Program for this year together with their campaign on selling of statement shirts.

Paulo was lucky as he had one a shirt from the organizer of the said project.

When the clock struck 4, the program has already ended which is part of my targets as well.

Thank you sponsors.

And I must say, thank you participants for taking part of this event. Let's make Phase 2 happen!
