April Flowers: Watching My Garden Grow (literally!)

in #petals7 years ago

Spring is definitely my favorite time of year. Everything is fresh and bright green and growing. The weeds are still sort of under control. I have hope for my tomatoes this year, like every year. And I get to go to plant sales at local garden clubs to buy all sorts of new and unexpected lovelies and then try to find a spot for them in my ever expanding garden beds. Then I drink my morning tea or coffee as I scrutinize the beds every morning, checking to see what has grown, what is languishing, what is about to bloom, what rotten weeds are back again, etc. It's very calming, except for the weed part!

This is one of my recent finds: A type of hollyhock that looks like it was hand-painted. I love to stare at the petals. I love the colors. I'm gonna have to remember to save the seeds!

Evening primrose is basically a weed. It spreads and grows really fast, but it's really pretty. I just pull it up when it starts getting out of its own lane. This is the first one I saw blooming this year, along with some pinks I think they're called, which also spread very well!

This rose bush is planted right by the curb for some reason. It was there when we moved in and has always produced, but always sort of been unruly. This year I must have done better with pruning it because it looks like a bush and I love the color and smell of these beauties.

At my favorite garden sale, I bought some columbines last year and this year. This plant is from last year and since it was too small to bloom last year, it was a total surprise this year to see the cool upside down flowers it produces. It lives by the compost bin, which is probably why it grew so much, but I might move it to the front next year - it is so pretty!

These babies are from this year's sale. I love purple so much, I got two of these.

And last but not least, another columbine find from last year. So glad they survived the winter.

Your flower are beautiful. I spend enormous amounts of time with my flowers too, but here in France it is too early for the cosmos, poppies, and even the lavatera. So I am growing them in my veranda and will put them out mid-may. Looking forward to a colorful summer!

Well, in Atlanta the daffodils start popping up in January! I'm always surprised, but they do. I grew up in Ohio and lived in France for several years (Le Mans, Nantes), so the early spring here still surprises me here. My mother-in-law near La Ferté Bernard has a huge garden and about 50 potted plants too - Whenever we visit I spend a lot of time observing her flowers too. And of course the jardins des plantes in France are to die for. Enjoy when yours start to pop out!

Yes @orangina, this is an exciting time of the year for gardeners. I am heading down to the South of France to see my granddaughter, and when I come back will plant everything. Hoping to make it to Giverny in May.
