Social Media in the Philippines
Social Media, and all it's Glory
Social media, the common escape after a tiresome day at work, or just a past time for those who are bored, and in some cases are their "way of life". Here in the Philippines we have about 105,477,218 residents based on survey, and it is safe to say that about 70-80% of this population are registered to different social media platforms, may it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., social media has been the norm since it's beginning and some experts says that these platforms that connects people worldwide actually disconnects people in reality. But I may have to disagree, let's take a look at a photo taken way before even a personal computer have been available for mass production.
As we can see in the image above, people "can be" and "will be" disconnected regardless of the technology, so in short people chose to spend time on social media in their own accord. Now that we got that out of the way, let's review what are the possible benefit of social media, we will focus mainly on the benefit, since we all know the major disadvantage which is "disconnection in real life". So let's talk about the good side.
The GOOD
Social media can bridge gaps, may it be distance, time, or language barrier, as they say a "a picture paints a thousand words", a single image post on social media even without caption can summarize your experience from a trip, so many people are hooked on social media because through social media, they can visit places or meet people they want to even without traveling or leaving the house.
It is also a good stress reliever since you can post anything on it may it be you venting steam from a bad day at work or announcing how happy you are with your relationship or with life itself, social media has been the medium for people to express how they feel at the time they are making the post.
Good source of information(although not always), we can see news and articles about the world at the very tip of our hands, no need to pay for monthly cable or daily newspaper rations, just a few clicks and you got access to the latest news and trends all around the globe.
Good source of advertisement, some people use social media as their advertisement platform, since it is fast free and versatile. They can advertise their products and services, when they want, where they want and how they want it to be, so some people or even big businesses turns to social media for advertisements.
All of the above mentioned are just a few of the benefits social media brings to people. But what if, you can take your social media usage a step higher than your usual posting or your usual OOTD posts? "How" would be the first thing that will eventually come to most people's mind. I't's true that you can earn some decent money through social media, but what if you learned that the thing you have been doing in platforms like Facebook and Twitter for free can earn you money, considering you make posts with contents and substance that appeals to a great number of individuals?
Steemit. Revolutionizing Social Media
"I've seen this "Steemit" thing on ______(<-insert social media platform here), but I have completely no idea what it is.". This is what I get when I ask most of my friends if they know what "steemit" is. Most social media users here in the philippines don't know what steemit is and what are the benefits they can get using this platform, so here I am, making making my first post on steemit and I decided that my first post would be a shameless promotion of this great platform, in hopes of making steemit a thing here in my place. so let's break down the FAQs and we shall answer this based also on the FAQs provided by the website itself.
What is Steemit.com?
"Steemit is a social network and content rewards platform that makes the crowd the beneficiaries of the attention economy. It does this be rewarding users with STEEM.
Steemit has redefined social media by building a living, breathing, and growing social economy; a community where users are getting rewarded for sharing their voice."
How does Steemit work?
"Steemit is a social media platform that works by having the crowd reward the crowd for their content. It does this thanks to the Steem blockchain and cryptocurrency; Steem is 'minted' daily and distributed to content producers according to the votes they get."
How does Steemit differ from other social media websites?
"Most social media sites extract value from their userbase for the benefit of shareholders alone. Steemit is different, it's a new kind of attention economy. By connecting with the Steem blockchain (which is decentralized and controlled by the crowd), Steemit users receive all the benefits and rewards for their attention."
These are only the top 3 FAQs on the website and you can find those here: https://steemit.com/faq.html#What_is_Steemit_com if you ever find yourself asking "what am I doing with my precious time on social media?" or "how can I make my spare time productive?"
The Conclusion
Social media isn't a bad thing, how we use it determines what is bad, if you make profit from using social media then social media is a good thing for you, but if otherwise then it is bad, it is really that simple. I hope by posting this, I can be an eye opener to my country men who are spending plenty of their time on social media, if you can't get away from social media, why not profit from it? Or get something good out of it rather than the usual narcissistic posts, or self indulgent selfies, instead revolutionize your social media experience.

Great post James and indeed Social media can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how it used
Some of the bad thing about it is disconnecting with everyone around you at certain times. We have observed this many times in a table surrounded by friends and family and yet glued to their screens talking to someone else.
Just a suggestion please make sure to give credit to the site where you got your pics as we do not want cheetah bot to flag you.
Great piece and full steemit ahead!

Nice post! I agree that when Filipinos would be hearing about this site, they would have more fun posting here than in other social media sites where they just get likes without any profit. I hope this would be promoted in our country.
And by the way, welcome to Steemit! :D
