Life StorYnia: Adulting - Life Guide for Fresh Grads

in #philippines7 years ago (edited)

Just when students thought all struggles will end after graduation, came adulting. Adulting, as they call it, is the stage where youth vanishes and realities of life come into the picture. This stage usually starts after school, around 20-21 years old.

There are certain things that we only think about when we enter adulthood or adulting. Some would be bills, job, career, needs, wants or even love life. These are the things that we unwillingly face when adulthood hits. Most fresh graduates, especially millennials would take these things as a challenge. Fresh graduates nowadays are very resourceful and powerful. With the skill set and talents they possess, they usually surpass expectations from previous generations.

Fresh grads are often choosy. Choosy in a positive way. They only want the best for them. Let's take job hunting as an example. Fresh grads are usually idealistic. They want to work on their own time and own terms, which is really not bad. Why? Because it means they can be a good leader and a manager. They also want to be part of something beneficial for the company. Someone who contributes to the company simply because they want to feel that they are needed.

Some fresh grads work immediately after graduation, some take their masters and some take time to think. With the things that needed to be kept in mind, how would a fresh grad survive the real world?

Set realistic goals.

Let's put an emphasis to realistic. Goals should be achievable, something that can be done. With most millennials being idealistic, they forget to be realistic because they want the best. While wanting the best is not bad, always remember that it takes time to be one.

Propose a timeline.

A time frame would be helpful in making goals realistic. A goal will not be achieved if no action is being done. Be detailed when you propose a timeline. Include the year, month and the specific goal you want to achieve. Of course, it is just a timeline. It does not necessarily mean that you have to stick with it all the time. It will just serve as a guide.

Expect the unexpected.

In life, there are things that can't be anticipated. No matter how organized or detailed you are, if it's meant to happen, it will happen. Always give some space to the things that might happen. In this way, you would still be prepared.

Always aim to contribute.

It is always a good feeling if you know that you are worthy. One thing you can do while you're young is to make yourself valuable. This is the key to financial freedom. When you are being seen as valuable, you increase your market value. How do you do this?

Venture to start-ups.

This is in relation to the previous tip. When you work in a start-up company, there is a bigger chance that your ideas will be heard. Not that big companies do not listen to opinions. Their difference from start-ups is that start-up companies explore. They are open to change and do not stick with the tradition. Start-up companies are basically a work in progress. These companies invest in the best people because their people will be the company’s foundation. So if you are working for a start-up company, congratulations! It just means that you are one of the best people.

Keep in mind that the world is limitless.

Utilize the word fresh in fresh graduate. You start from the beginning, all new and fresh. It means that new skills and talents may arise. And you should be open to that. The world is limitless and so are you.

If you already have set your goals, then the next steps will be easier. Opportunities are always there, determination isn't. The right opportunity comes to those who are determined to find them.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

With most millenials being idealistic, they forget to be realistic because they want the best.
It should be millennials instead of millenials.

As a parent I just have to say the struggle is real to get kids prepared for adulthood today. Yeah I know my parents say the same thing. But in the US there are less kids with real world responsabilities It seems to prepare for adulthood. I think a generation of us still have this mentality that your an adult between the age of 16-19. You should be ready. When in fact the maturity rate is 20-24 for males and females.
