How Does Poverty And Stress Affect The Brain? 🧠

in #philosophy6 years ago

Nearly All Experience Lows

Many of us have gone through the years full of self-consciousness and peer pressure. At some point, you may have thought your parents were too strict or that your teachers were too annoying. Despite this, you managed to struggle through it all to read this post.

Unfortunately, stress and impoverishment are correlated. Something that is more important than unhealthy lifestyles and lack of access to sensible health care is that chronic stress makes many vulnerable to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, depression and diabetes. The impact upon the brain is seen with those who have post-traumatic stress disorder.

Impact On The Young Mind

Teenagers are renowned for having periods of stress and unhappiness, and these factors can have an impact on their decision-making process. However, teenagers are not totally incapable of constructing optimum and rational decisions. However, emotionally salient stimuli may make it harder for them. What is ever-changing throughout adolescence are the pathways that connect the prefrontal cortex to regions that are in control of motivation, feeling and processing rewards.

When chronic stress is experienced, it is typically devastating since the hippocampus regulates emotional responses, is vital for the formation of memory and spacial awareness. (The impact of chronic stress is totally different from the reaction to acute stress, which can be useful by, as an example, inflicting greater alertness and raised focus.)

The Odds Stacked Against Them

Poor children experience high levels of stress as a result of, amongst various reasons, they live in violent neighbourhoods, walk across many busy vehicular intersections, move house twice as often and find themselves evicted five times as much as the average person, are also probably to be intimidated at school.

True impoverishment (not that regarding recent immigrants, graduate students or religious ascetics) takes it toll on children. Society should intervene early by reducing stress to acceptable levels. The social modification should be self-conscious and communal. It isn’t a matter of one person being kind to another. it is a wholesale commitment to make certain that every child has the prospect to measure without chronic stress.
