The Scenic Route--Angkor Wat, Cambodia

in #photo7 years ago

Angkor Wat could quite possible be the hottest place I've been on this planet. The heat wraps around your existence like a damp blanket. Fortunately, The historic grounds host a number of coconut vendors that will sell you one with a straw inside for about 50 cents.

(Constantly was wipin sweat off my face)

I've always heard about the beauty and majesty of the ancient Khmer ruins in Siem Reap, but it was not until I visited them in person that I fully experienced what friends and strangers had tried to convey. The first thing you notice: Angkor Wat is massive! The structures are much larger than pictures online lead one to believe. While many think of the main temple complex, its five elongated domes stretching skyward, as the main attraction, there are actually dozens of temple complexes and structures scattered throughout a large part of the jungle.

I recommend spending at least two days there. We visited the park in two consecutive days and still did not have enough time to explore the numerous sites within the old Khmer capital. Each structure is completely covered with sculptures and carvings, impressive in their intricacy and volume. Some reliefs depict Hindu epics, while others display Khmer warriors, dancers, or organic patterns. Many of these designs are often obscured by the local trees, whose roots and branches extend like tentacles over adjacent buildings.

Occasionally, a monkey, bird, or even cat would make itself known, in the hopes of acquiring various snacks from the many tourists visiting Angkor Wat.

The ruins, jungle, animals, and harsh weather all came together to make a surreal and unforgettable experience. At times you truly feel as if you are transported back in time, or have somehow been sucked in to an old Indiana Jones flick.

You're totally right man; there's not a photo in existence that can properly convey the colossal size of Angkor Wat. It's akin to strolling through any regular wat scattered somewhere in Cambodia... as an ant!

I feel the same. We have reached a conshenshus

nice shots. the fourth one of the tree is a great perspective.
