Best buddies. I did have a cat and dog when I was a kid, that were best buddies like this. We thought the cat got attached to the dog when she had kittens. She would follow that dog everywhere, and when he stopped, she'd rub her face all up and down his sides. It was a good lesson in friendships happening in unexpected places.
